| Freak369's Full Review: ZonePerfect Bars, Chocolate Raspberry Supreme (12 ... |
For someone that doesnt like raspberries in the least, it was pretty funny for my kids to watch me rip open the wrapper on this and take the first bite. I thought they were playing a trick on me since the first sniff of it made me think of strawberry cheesecake, not the flavor that was listed on the wrapper. The chocolate coating was a definite perk in getting me to try the bar and when I was done with it I thought hummmm, that wasnt too bad. If you knew me and my distaste for berries, you would know that is a bold statement to make - me, enjoying a berry flavored bar?. Ok, Ill admit it, I didnt go crazy for this bar like some of the other flavors but given my disliking of the berry family I think I did pretty good finishing the whole thing. My sons had mixed reactions to the bar but it was my oldest that flipped over this flavor blend and asked me to add it to the list of groceries when I go to the store.
What Is It?
The Zone Perfect bars are based on the Zone Diet principal of a diet that consists of a food intake of 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat. Nutritionally these bars are pretty much dead on accurate, even more so if you are trying to stick to a 2,000 calorie a day diet. Since I dont follow the Zone Diet or keep to a 2,000 calorie a day diet, you might not think that Id be interested in a nutrition bar, but there are times when I get a craving or just need to sneak a treat when I am in the middle of a low carb cycle. These bars are not meant to be used as a substitute for a complete and well balanced meal, if you start to rely on these as your sole source of fuel chances are youll fall over an pass out within the first few days. Unlike other bars on the market, this isnt really a sports nutrition bar [low carb, high protein, energy etc], its simply there to provide your body with the Zone Diet 40 / 30 / 30 ratio and help to keep you from going completely off a diet.
Taste
The bar is chocolate coated so it wasnt too hard for me to finish it but Ive never been a big fan of raspberries so this didnt go down as easily as other bars from this series. The taste is sweet but no so much so that it is overpowering. As much as I hate to say it, this bar might have been better if it didnt have the chocolate coating and was presented like the Zone Perfect Bar - Apple Cinnamon one. This has the small soy nuggets so you do get a nice crunch from it and gives you something to sink your teeth into. My oldest son was the one that really pestered me in to getting this flavor so when I saw them on sale at Target I couldnt pass up the price buy one get one free. We both tried them out at the same time and he finished his about ten minutes before I finished mine. For me to take that long to eat a bar means that it is either pretty nasty or a flavor that doesnt appeal to me in the case of this bar its definitely the latter. If you are a fan of raspberry and chocolate you owe it to yourself to try this bar out. One word of warning, dont drink a carbonated beverage when eating this, it really ruins the taste of both items.
Nutritional Values
This bar is similar to other Zone Perfect bars when it comes to the vitamin and mineral levels but here are some of the specifics when you consume this youll be getting 200% of the RDA [recommended daily allowance] of Vitamin C and B6, 210% Vitamin E, 100% Niacin and 45% of B12. Considering that this only had 7 grams of fat, this would be a great treat for those that are trying to cut back on their total fat intake but still allowing them to get the recommended vitamins and minerals. The wrapper notes that this contains 3 milligrams of Omega 3 [fish oil], which is promoted as a supplement that fights off heart disease and helps joint functions. If this is something that you are interested in learning more about, ask your doctor or health care provider for other options like flax seed oil. As a whole the bar is safe for anyone to eat and my sons have really enjoyed most of the flavors that are available. For me this is a little too high in carbohydrates for me to eat on a regular basis but for a snack or on a cheat day I can honestly say that Id rather have a Zone Perfect bar over a regular candy bar most of the time.

The Bottom Line
This flavor might take a while to start to appeal to you but if you are a fan of a mild but sweet raspberry flavor with a silky chocolate coating, then this is the bar for you. Ive never been a fan of raspberry so this wasnt a first choice flavor for me but I figured why not give it a try and see if I was missing anything. I wont say that this bar is horrible because it isnt; its just not a flavor combination that appealed to me. My oldest son liked these more than the rest of the brood so I wont have to worry about them going to waste, if fact Id bet than there are only a few left
If I would have known that my oldest would have loved these I would have definitely picked up more of them when they were on sale.
