Pros:Very easy to fish, very successful lure, variety of colors, price

Cons:Reaction to temperatures, durability, oily residue when new

The Bottom Line: You will get tired of catching fish before the fish get tired of catching the Fluke jerkbait by Zoom.

Fish are wickedly evil creatures. If you doubt me, think of that time you went fishing and everyone else around you seemed like they were catching fish and you were only slowly drowning worms. They know that they get under your skin. Fish can see you from under the water. They can see the tear form at the corner of your eye as that seven year old kid caught the lunker of your dreams with his $12 Snoopy rod. Fish delight in this.

Zoom, understanding the inherent dangers of fish and the jealously they can cause among fishermen and just darn lucky kids and have developed the answer, the Fluke jerkbait.

Is that a jerkbait in your pocket?
Let me give you the basics here. The Fluke, though poorly named, is an outstanding soft artificial lure. It measures four and quarter inches in length. The Fluke has a blunt nose, narrow body, and a long slender tail with a slight split at the end. The body cavity is split from the torso end to the head in two halves. The plastic itself is soft and carries a slight oily residue when first used.

The hollow body takes some mass from the midsection of the lure and allows the bait to move more freely and naturally even when a hook is inserted through the lure. The thinner the plastic, the easier that plastic should move. It also allows you to hook the bait from above, from below, or through the bait without compromising the lures action.

The head of the Fluke lacks any real detail, as does much of the bait. The head of the Fluke is the thickest part of the lure and holds the densest of the soft plastic. This is the strongest point of the lure and should be used as the base for any presentation.

The tail is slightly segmented at the tail’s end to define a little more of the lifelike silhouette of the lure. The Fluke does look like a fingerling (a fish that is less than one year in age). Fingerlings are prime targets of larger fish because they usually do not have the speed or skills to avoid predators.

How do you jerk your bait?
The Fluke can be fished in all of the common riggings. The Texas rigging without a nose weight is the most popular but you can Carolina rig it too.

I present the lure with the hook (use a bait holder or a barbed straight hook to hold the Fluke on better) run through the head from above at a 45-degree angle with the hook turned to the body and pulled back up through the hollow torso. This will leave the hook point just slightly poking from the lure’s back. It is a weedless presentation that exposes the hook set easily when a strike occurs. The Fluke’s soft plastic body is perfect for this. The body, with little of the hook actually through allows the lure to move more naturally. The lure is soft enough to compress down exposing the hook at the strike.

What kind of a jerk are you?
Zoom makes the Fluke in several color options. This will help you match the lure to different water colors as well as to better match the native species of the waters you are fishing.

A fact to keep in mind when selecting a color is that most predatory fish are cannibalistic. Gross, I know, but good to know too. If you are fishing for bass, why not use a lure that looks like a young and helpless bass? A big fish does not want competition from little fish for the available food supply. And big fish have big stomachs that need to be filled too so why not kill two birds with one stone? Eat the little fish to get full and limit the competition.

Zoom has the following colors available for the Fluke:

Watermelon Seed- A more translucent dark green body with a faint orange hue and dark spots. Similar to a perch.

White Pearl- A reflective solidly white colored lure.

Goldfish- A dark back section and lighter belly with orange, black and reflective spots. Looks like a koi goldfish.

Albino- Pearly white body with a slight blue tint to the back.

Smoking Shad- Dark blue back with a shiny white belly with a slight blue tint.

Baby Bass- Dark green body with brown spots.

White Ice- Reflective white body with a slight pink back.

Smokey Rainbow- Slightly translucent gray body with reflective dark green, brown and silver flecks.

Personal Impressions
I am letting you in on something here. Really I am. It nearly pains me to write about this. The Fluke jerkbait by Zoom is my secret weapon. I love this lure and have enjoyed many, many hours fishing for bass with the Fluke. It is that good that I am questioning myself on whether or not to tell you about it! Too late, right?!

I will tell that I have never had the success with any other lure that I have had with the Fluke. That is a pretty strong statement and I mean it. I showed that little punk up with his $12 Snoopy rod let me tell you. The Fluke is outstanding because it looks so much like a fingerling. So close in fact that I have gotten strikes right on the cast, like the fish were waiting for me to toss it their way.

The key is to fish the Fluke like it is a fingerling. Soft then quick movements that mimic the actions of a fleeing or injured fish have triggered explosive strikes along weed beds and even in the open water. It is very common for the strike to hit on the dead play. You have moved the bait and then stopped, letting it drift for a moment, then BAM! That is a testament to how much the Fluke looks like a fingerling, that the fish actually gets a good look at it sitting motionless and still strikes.

There are some other factors of the lure that are not so great though. The plastic itself is very easy to tear. It is so soft that you can see the teeth marks (bass have tiny bumps on their lips that are abrasive) after a strike. A Fluke will probably only last about five landings tops. One aggressive strike on a new Fluke actually tore my lure apart.

Another point is that the plastic reacts quickly to temperature changes. This is could be a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. In the spring when the water is still cool the Fluke will stiffen up too much to be very lifelike but it does make the lure last longer. But that fact could be chalked up to the fact that you are getting less strikes because the lure is too stiff. In warm weather is when the lure comes to life. It will be pliable enough to create realistic movements while still being durable. When the weather gets too hot the soft plastic of the Fluke gets even softer. In the dog days of summer you will likely tear your lure on stout casts.

The lure is also very oily when you first get it out of the pack. I dip mine in the water then towel them dry before running the hook through them. This keeps the oil from lubricating the hook and allowing the bait to slide around. The oily residue may also have a scent that detracts the fish. The label by Zoom makes no mention of added fish attractants so I will have to presume that the oil is a byproduct of the manufacturing process.

Even with those points, the Fluke is still an outstanding lure. The weight of the lure is nearly perfectly balanced. It reacts quickly to movement from the rod tip and then slowly drifts and drops. Big strikes usually happen right then. Boom! When you see the water boil set the hook baby, you got a fish on!

The Fluke is sold in packs in packs of 10 and are priced at most stores for under $3.00 so you can afford to rip a couple up. They are well worth the price.

I highly recommend you getting up and going out right now and getting the Fluke jerkbaits by Zoom. The fish may regret it but you won’t!

Another Note of the Fluke by Zoom
The Fluke is the original size (4.25 inches, sold in a 10 pack)) but also comes in other sizes.
Tiny Fluke- three inches long, sold in a 20 pack
Super Fluke Jr- Four inches long, sold in a 10 pack
Super Fluke- 5.25 inches, sold in 10 packs
