| jerryla323's Full Review: Zum Deutschen Eck |
Having grown up in Chicago's Lincoln Square area, I was practically weaned on the many German restaurants in the area, all up and down Lincoln Ave. Sadly, they are almost all gone. One of the few holdouts is Zum Deutschen Eck, and for good reason. The food here is GOOD!
The first thing you'll notice is how big the place is, yet pleasantly divided up into many cozy little dining rooms. Don't let the waitresses' kitschy retro dirndl skirts and peasant blouses turn you off: the waitresses here are always friendly and eager to help with the menu, although little things, like keeping your water glass or coffee cup filled can sometimes get overlooked on busy evenings.
The soups and appetizers here are generally very good. My dad is a real chicken soup connoiseur, and he loves the soup here. I kinda like the soup with liver dumplings, but then again, I like liver, too. The liver taste is pretty mild, though, if you're tempted to try it.
The entrees are pretty standard Bavarian fare (Sauerbraten, bratwurst, schnitzels of various varieties, etc.), but usually very well done. My favorite is usually Rahmschnitzel, a breaded, sauteed veal cutlet smothered in a rich creamy mushroom sauce. The only consistent dud I've ever had here seems to be the Sauerbraten, which always seems to come out very dry, but maybe that's the way it's SUPPOSED to be, who knows? The pork roasts are usually a good bet, too, very juicy, or the smoked pork chop. Side dishes are usually red cabbage, yummy sauerkraut, boiled red potatoes in parsley butter, and fresh veggies.
You can get a good deal on a complete dinner, including soup, salad, beverage, and dessert (i.e. ice cream), which we usually get, but we skip the dessert that comes with the dinner, and get the apple strudel with whipped cream instead! YUM!!! A full bar with a wide variety of German beers on tap as well as in the bottle is available. They also have a wide selection of spiked coffee drinks, which you can get in a souvenir coffee mug (tacky, I know, but I couldn't resist! :) )
Reservations are not required, but I would recommend them especially for parties of four or more, on weekends. I believe they have a parking lot a block or two away, but most of the time we have been able to find street parking closer.
