Pros: No nonsense, compact, light weight, white colored, mess reducing lock-on can opener.
Cons: Cons? None really! Just CANS.
The Bottom Line: Finally a manual can opener that helps the user rather than fighting with them. Marvelous ergonomic engineering. Well, what else would you expect from Zyliss? Zyliss Rules!

| zlotmachinskyr's Full Review: Zyliss Can Opener I Can Opener |
Every kitchen needs a can opener. Every kitchen should have a manual can opener in the event of a power outage. This is one of the nicest can openers on the market. Yes you can spend less on a can opener than on this model but then you will get less too.
Zyliss is one of those Swiss companies that makes a huge number of high tech, ultra modern high performance kitchen products that make life in the kitchen just so much easier.
This can opener is one of those products and as is very often the case with Zyliss products, becomes a defacto standard that the competition must match to even be close to making the grade.
So what is unique about this product that makes it a stand out?
One of the first things you will notice is the texture of the material of which it is made. This can opener has a nice hand feel with the texture of the exterior that has been molded into it.
This opener is made mostly of an engineering plastic of some type which reduces the weight to very low level and also minimizes the chance of rusting to just the pin axle and the gear cutter on the business end.
This opener locks onto the can so as to make handling the can much more manageable. This will allow the pouring off of excess liquids and dispensing stock or juices. This is a boon to elderly or handicapped people who struggle with every day tasks as it stays on the can until released by pulling the lock button on top back located near where the users thumb would be. This helps prevent splashes of the user from having to fight to keep the can in use from tipping or the opener clunking down heavily on the preparation counter.
Opens square cans such as canned oysters without dropping off the can and splashing oil packed foods.
Rugged and compact because it made of a tough resin and locks closed to maintain its diminutive size when in the drawer. This keeps the tool from opening and reeking havoc by catching on other tools in your kitchen tool drawer.
The shape is ergonomic but clearly for the right hand of the user. But once locked on to a can the wings of the cutter head could theoretically be turned by the left hand of the user.
If you love off white colored appliances and kitchen tools
then you are in luck because this one comes in white. Other colors may exist for this tool but I haven't seen them on this product. White is nice because it shows soiling of the tool and also lets you know that it is clean after being washed.
Strictly a can opener. No confusing do it all other functions. This is just a locking can opener that must lock onto the can in order to function. It must also be unlocked to get it off the can but in the meantime it functions as a handle making emptying the contents that much easier and less messy. So when you need to open a can reach for this tool and don't think about this tool for any other kitchen function, as it doesn't have any. Takes up little space in one's kitchen drawer even with its slight angled head.
Leaves a nice smooth edge in the opened can so as to reduce the chance of cuts to the user from a ragged edge left behind inside the can or on the edge of the lid.
A great product for sure and I just love using this tool. Now I don't dread opening cans as I once used to with other lesser manual can openers.
Addendum 12-21-2003
It's no longer theory! I opened a rectangular can of oil packed smoked oysters with with my left hand once the can opener was locked onto the can. The left handed user of this can opener can turn the wing knob forward (ccw = counter clockwise), or backward (cw = clock wise)with the opener pointing away from the user and on the opposite side of the can. The can opened with a completely clean cut and that was on a can with a pull tab opener. As little as 3 millimeters of metal separated the lid edge from pull tab in some places. This tool worked well to drain the oil as well and none was splashed in the process of opening this can.
