Pros: Durable, "fat" handle, sharp steel blade, two cutting tools in one
Cons: I still prefer Oxo's rubber handles, although it's unlikely you'll "zest" yourself if you slip
The Bottom Line: The Zyliss Zester is a fun addition to the kitchen. It is a great tool to learn with, and will last for years to come!

| Javelina's Full Review: Zyliss Zester |
Being a vegetarian, Im always looking for creative meals or creative ways to prepare/present meals. Recently, Ive started trying out some new kitchen tools. And although I already have an Oxo Zester, I ended up trying a Zyliss Zester as well.
The Zester
Like most/all Zyliss kitchen tools, the zester has a shiny white handle. The handle is fat, with a hole in the top for easier storage. The Zyliss logo is imprinted on a piece of metal that is inlaid in the handle. The handle is designed to not slip, because of its shape. In addition, it is supposed to be non-slip plastic, and is coated with a UV protectant to prevent it from yellowing with age.
The blade on the zester is sharp steel, and has two different cutting tools. The end, with its small holes, creates small peels and zest. The center of the blade has a channel for cutting larger pieces of fruit or whatnot.
Performance
If you compare this product to the Oxo Zester, I really think I like the placement of the channel blade a bit better on this one. However, it is balanced out by my preference for Oxos rubber handles.
There is a 5-year warranty on this product, although I dont have any concerns about its durability. This is a tough little tool, and I doubt that I will encounter any problems with it. It is well designed and easy to use, especially if youre like me, still experimenting with zesting!
This is also dishwasher safe, but I wash it by hand for two reasons. The first being that this is a small item, which I dont want getting thrown around in the dishwasher. Secondly, I like to have it on hand, and if I wash it myself, then I dont have to worry about bits of fruit or whatnot drying on to the blade, making it harder to wash should I need it!
Both blades are nice and sharp, and cut through food fairly easily. I mostly use the zester for things like garnishes or lemon zest. Its amazing how much some little curls of carrot can really decorate a salad!
Price & Hints
Zyliss kitchen tools are a little bit pricey, but its worth it in the long run. It saves you the angst of poorly designed or breakable kitchen tools. I got mine for around $7.00 at Linens N Things.
Keep in mind that Linens N Things and Bed Bath and Beyond put out coupons regularly. Since they accept competitors coupons, you can use them at either location. You usually see 20% off or $5 off $15, which can make purchasing 3 or 4 items very worthwhile! (You can basically buy 2 or 3, get one free). Sometimes they have sets as well, which are more economical to purchase.
Overall
This is a fun little tool to have in the kitchen. Although Im still trying out new things, having a good quality zester like this makes the learning process a little easier. With a sharp blade, nice design, and comfortable handle, the Zyliss Zester is a worthwhile purchase.
