I am one of the biggest Disney fan you could ever meet. However, this movie is an exception to my "Disney can do no wrong when it comes to animated movies" policy. I have always found the live action Mary Martin version much more enjoyable. In contrast, this movie is probably my least favorite animated Disney film.
First of all, it starts out with Wendy being kicked out of the nursery because she is too old. But before that happens, she is allowed to tell her brothers one last bedtime story about her hero, the adventurous and dreamy Peter Pan. And that night, who should show up but Peter Pan himself?
Like any good groupie, Wendy allows herself to be whisked away by the mischievous boy in the green tights, bringing her brothers along for good measure. This Peter looks to be about 14 years old, and he is a perfect picture of that bratty teenage boy you wouldn't want living next door to you.
Enter Never Never Land and a host of obnoxious characters to match the protagonist. Tinkerbell, the skimpily clad fairy with the hourglass figure who is always in a huff because Peter Pan is paying more attention to Wendy or Tiger Lily. This little lady with the abominable attitude has unfortunately become an icon for Disney. The Lost Boys are a group of ill-mannered, street-smart boys in animal costumes. For the most part, they are anything but lovable. And Tiger Lily's tribe is downright offensive. I think "Pocahontas" did a beautiful job of portraying a Native American culture, but I don't know if anything will be able to quite make up for the insulting portrayal of Indians in this film.
Hook is suitably villainous, his henchmen predictably dopey. The crocodile is a willing accomplice is the Captain's downfall. Occasional songs break up the mediocre dialogue in this movie, but the songs are mediocre too so it doesn't help much. All in all, the story is pretty poorly presented and none of the characters are as enjoyable as they have been in other versions. My word of advice? Skip Disney for this story and go with Broadway instead.
