pmckay's Full Review: Jamie Lee Curtis - Where Do Balloons Go?
When a balloon accidentally slips out of your grasp, where does it go? This question sets up the premise to Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery, written by Jamie Lee Curtis and illustrated by Laura Cornell. The book follows balloons through their imagined journeys across town, in restaurants, through the air, across space, and beyond.
Curtis has a clever, gentle use of language. Her style of prose is not as witty as, say a Dr. Seuss book. However, her rhythm is pleasing to the ear. Curtis has a knack for leaving just enough to the imagination.
Cornell is a talented illustrator, and her work gives Curtis’ words a beautiful life. Each page is full of expression. It is easy to find new things on each page. The watercolors are bright and full of color.
The book is 30 pages long. Two pages unfold for a “hidden” page, as my daughter called it. We missed that on the first reading, and I wondering why the rhyming was off. An added bonus is that the last page is full of reusable stickers. The stickers can be used on both the inside front and back cover areas. My daughter loves the stickers. There are several balloons, with wigs, glasses and hats for creative play.
My daughter is 4 years old, and the book is recommended for ages 4-8. This seems on target. My daughter enjoys the story, and it has given us the opportunity to discuss where she thinks balloons go. It is fun for us to lay in her bed, after reading the book at bedtime, and think about where and what balloons do when we aren’t around.
Curtis and Cornell have also teamed up to create Today I Feel Silly, Tell Me Again About The Night I Was Born, and When I Was Little.
Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery is priced at $16.95 hardback, and is available at most online retailers. All in all, this book would make a nice gift for a young child in your world.
