| cmaw63's Full Review: Anne Frasier - Sleep Tight |
After reading Anne Frasier's debut novel, Hush, I knew I wanted to try more of her books. Did my second venture into her writing world equal the first?
Sleep Tight
At the age of 16, Mary Cantrell stumbles over the dead body of her best friend. It changes her from a laughing, fun-loving teenager into someone who grows up to be a serious FBI profiler. She hasn't been home in years due to an estrangement from her sister, Gillian.
Gillian's best friend, Gavin, confessed to killing Mary's friend...yet, she refuses to abandon him. She visits him in prison and supports his efforts to make it in the world after his release from prison. Shortly after Gavin's parole women start turning up dead. Mary is called back home to help find the killer, already convinced she knows who the prime suspect should be. Gillian has become a police officer and is set to work on the case with her sister and believes Mary is wrong.
Is Gavin on the prowl again? Can Mary and Gillian set aside their differences and solve the case? With the help of Anthony, her FBI partner, Mary hopes to stay strong enough to endure the memories of her past and stop the madman that is terrorizing her hometown.
On to the 3rd Anne Frasier Book
I'm happy to say that I enjoyed Sleep Tight as much as I did Hush. Anne Frasier creates characters that I can relate to and find interesting. Mary is given a solid background that identifies who she is now. I was convinced that she truly was who she became through losing her friend and the estrangement of her sister. Her budding relationship with Anthony was a minor part of the story, yet gave a broader look at who Mary would become.
Gillian was another character that was believable, yet I didn't find as compelling as others. While her relationship with Gavin is explained a little better somewhere in the middle of the book, by that time I had formed an opinion about her. Not that it was bad...just not good.
There were few minor players in the book (other than the bad guy). They were all given their own personalities and enhanced the story. I liked that there wasn't an over abundance of them. Blanche, the mother, is a quirky woman who added some lightheartedness to an otherwise serious storyline.
The story plays out well with a medium pace that never lost my interest. Some of the strange ways the deceased women were found were interesting and unlike any I had read in other books. I was sure I knew who the killer was...I was wrong. I like it when a book has a twist I didn't see coming and I realize I didn't have it as figured out as I thought I did. Sleep Tight has sent me on the journey to find a third Anne Frasier novel.
