Pros: fairly small, contains good number of words, contains the right words
Cons: pretty small overall, bigger in size than some other dictionaries
The Bottom Line: A great latin dictionary for anyone who is starting latin to those having a few years of latin under their belt (up to about the 4th or 5th year).
Tibullus's Full Review: Cassell's Latin and English Dictionary
To me this is the classic beginners latin dictionary. This is the dictionary that my high school latin teacher made us all buy so that we would have something to start out with. It is a very useful dictionary, containing a good amount of words (and for the most part, the right ones -- that being defined as the ones that you are most likely to run across in doing translations for school).
For the most part, I would say that this dictionary would suffice a student throughout their latin career (for the most part), though I would suggest you have access to a bigger dictionary as one starts to translate harder and harder material (in college, I used this dictionary for the most part, and I supplemented it by referencing the Lewis and Short or Oxford dictionaries when my dictionary did not contain the word that I was looking up). There is a stage, however, when one should start thinking about purchasing a larger dictionary (at this point I would suggest the Lewis and Short, but some people would argue with me about that one).
One other nice feature of this dictionary (though it is rather common in dictionaries of this genre) is the fact that it contains not only Latin to English translations of words, but it also has a list of English to Latin translations which are great for exercises of the sort (as most people don't remember every word that can possibly be used in a certain situation). It is less than the greatest word list of all time, but again, it will definitely suffice for a good many years of Latin.
As far as size goes, the dictionary itself is smaller than your average dictionary, which is a good thing, as you can carry it around in a backpack with no problem at all. However, it is also a bit larger than many of the other latin dictionaries that are out there for this level of latin knowledge. Overall, it really doesn't matter much about the size (really, it doesn't matter), just some people prefer a dictionary that is a bit larger than others.
