Okay, I’ve reviewed All About Scabs, The Gas We Pass: The Story of Farts and The Holes in Your Nose. Yet, I’ve not done a review on the first body science book I was introduced to --- Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi.

This book is one of the cases where the title of the book also gives you the complete plot. On brightly colored pages we start out learning that “An elephant makes a big poop. A mouse makes a tiny poop.” It is discussed with many different animals and different background colors that “Everyone poops”. Like the book What Shat That?: A Pocket Guide to Poop Identity, we aren’t given photos of different kinds of poop. But the illustrator does draw them differently so we know that not all kinds of poop are the same. The author also discusses that animals do their business in a variety of different ways.

The illustrations are bright water colors in the style which can be seen above. Since it is watercolors, the pictures are not too graphic. If you look very closely you can tell that the baby with a dirty diaper is a boy. Text is written in ½ inch text for easy reading. Each page contains one sentence or one sentence fragments making this a very quick read.

Those who are toilet training are most likely the one to enjoy the page “He wipes himself with paper then flushes it down.” A smiling boy (without his pants on but you can tell it’s a boy for that reason) is shown getting rid of his remains.

Monkey Girl loved this book when she was three or four. I read it so many times I feel I can recite this book. I’ve taken this book to school before and have never run across a kid who did like it. First there are the laughs of “This book is about poopy” but then they get into the book talking about the different kind of poopy.

The only people I see not enjoying this book are those who don’t want to admit that their body produces anything that doesn’t smell like roses. If you are looking for a book that lets kids know that their excrement is a normal part of their body science, you need look no further than Everyone Poops.
