I love the Borg, as I am sure most Trekkers do!
I am not going to go into huge amount of detail about the book because you can read any one of the eight other descriptions, or even the jacket of the book, to get a feeling for the basic plot.
What I am about to do is tell you what I liked about the book, and what I didn't.
positives:
Story line is long, and without many holes.
The story is always moving; something not all of Shatner's books (especially those written after The Return) can claim.
The description of the Borg is all I have wanted and more!
The Borg are shown through different and varied lights - in fact, three people experience different sides and help form a complete picture of the beast.
The Borg are shown as being not only automations, but rather people and the collective at once.
Characters are written in a way that is accurate with dialogue and action you see on the show and in the movies.
Shatner did his work studying all that has been written about Star Trek and only errors a few times in his telling.
The defense side of the Federation is touched upon, something not regularly in Star Trek lore.
The book reads fast and easily so it can be read in a day of intense reading.
Shatner doesn't fill the book with explanations about regular Star Trek gizmos or characters and allows fans who really know about the series to get more from this book the average reader... little treats that aren't spelled out for everyone... only the true fans! I love that!
negatives:
Shelby is called a "him" near the end of the book. This single sex mention is inaccurate. Shelby is a she, not a he.
The idea of why Shatner was brought back, although believable, is kind of sketchy and really pushes what the reader is willing to accept.
Kirk's trials in hunting down Picard get repetitive.
McCoy should not have been included in the book.
Kirk too easily sails through battles with Worf... I don't believe he could have downed the Klingon with his own native weapons so easily.
I know this would be a lot to ask for... but I would have still liked more inside information about the Borg... complete assimilation logs... could that be a book of its own??
Overall, I really liked this book... I would recommend it to any (even mild) Star Trek fan... don't bother if you aren't familiar with the series, you won't have any idea what's going on.
I really felt that this book is a better telling of the Borg than the actual direction that the movies/shows took in First Contact and in Star Trek Voyager. This really should have been the premise for a real Star Trek movie!
