Pros: Interesting stories of how coincidences have changed ones life.
Cons: Little long on the celebrity stories
This book is one I purchased with a Christmas gift certificate and started it before I left on my trip. It did not take long for me to finish it on the first leg of our journey. It is a unique book of coincidences that happen in our life. The book When God Winks How the Power of Coincidences Guides your Life is written by SQuire Rushnell and the spelling of his name is correct. The author believes that there are these coincidences in our life that were meant for a purpose. He includes a lot of unusual happenings that occurred to him and many people he knew or was told to him.
I had not heard of this author but in the write up about him found he was involved with cable television and a President and CEO for more than twenty years with ABC Television. He is now a popular motivational speaker and has been interviewed on many television shows. To be truthful I have never seen these interviews either. I was drawn to this book after reading a review by our own LoisLane here on epinions. When looking for books to order I thought this would be a good choice. It is a small sized hard cover book of 161 pages so it is an easy read. You can check out his web page and he welcomes your own God Wink story so check out www.whengodwinks.com you will find discussion groups as well.
This book is divided into three parts as follows:
Part One: Opening your Eyes to see the Winks. This part is divided into four sections explaining that God winks all the time to trust your dreams and possibilities
Part Two: Using God Winks to Enrich your Life. Three sections relate on wishes and winks to reflect on and take comfort on God winks.
Part Three: Coincidences in All Walks of Life. In nine sections it goes from relationship coincidences in life saving, history, arts, sports, career and little serendipities.
In the introduction to this book the author explains many coincidences that have happened in his life. He also tells you how to look back on things that have happened to you and look for those coincidences that changed your life. The author believes we are influenced by a cosmic guidance system to keep us on the chosen path. At the beginning of each chapter he quotes people who some have their doubts and the first one was by Albert Einstein, I shall never believe that God plays dice with the world. Another was by Victor Hugo Life is the flower of which love is the honey. I found these little introductions very interesting.
The body of the book includes many experiences he has had that helped his career and how the God Winks and coincidences made him a believer. It was most interesting how these events led him into television and how the events then led to help his career with ABC. It did sound like rare coincidences but if they did not happen maybe the job would have been lost. He also relates events that happened in other peoples lives.
Through out the book he tells things that happened to well known people like Bill Clinton, Barbra Streisand, James Brolin, Kevin Costner, Oprah, Mary Lou Retton, plus many others. In one section he gives ten steps to success inspired by Norman Vincent Peale from his book The Power of Positive Thinking (my favorite) the author suggests to practice these steps every day and your life will be better. Very good list and should help to give you a positive outlook on life.
From this book I would be remiss if I did not include some winks of my own. One was recent after my husband had passed away in March 2003. He had requested no service and to take the children and grandchildren to someplace special and remember the good times. None of the children had known this was his request so when we all had gathered that day I told them his wishes. Many of the children knew of his wish to have his ashes spread from a bridge on a golf hole in Salado, Texas. They thought that we should all go there for this event. I called to Mill Creek in Salado and found out the days we could have a row of small townhouses together was on June 16 on Fathers Day weekend. It made this day more special with our memorial for him and we did remember all the good times.
Another event while staying in Iowa trying to sell my condo the winters got to me and I became anxious to live in a warmer climate. In May 2004 I flew down to Salado for a week to upgrade my townhouse getting it ready to sell. It was sold in two weeks and a home come up for sale on the Internet and my son and daughter-in-law who is a Realtor checked out for me. We all thought it was perfect for me, right on the golf course and a good price. After the deal was finalized I sent a friend of mine in Salado my new address. She wrote back that it was built by a Doctor who I remembered was born and raised in the Iowa town we lived in for 30 years. I knew this Doctor had a home there but did not know which one it was. When I heard this I realized my husband had been in that house when on occasion he would stop in to visit with this Doctor. It was an amazing coincidence as if it was meant to be. This is why I am so happy here and felt a few God Winks along the way.
Believe in those little coincidences there are around you all the time. This book had many good ideas but it was quite long on celebrity events. It does make some interesting reading and the last chapter of Little Serendipities as Gods way of showing he has a sense of humor. He gives examples of peoples names that match their occupation like Long Island dentist named Dr. E. Z. Fillum, to Tulsa physician named Dr. Safety First. These little coincidences have a way of coming into our lives so go with it even if you do not believe in a God, but maybe there is a higher power that is controlling things. On the back cover were recommendations and one by Paul Harvey Through riveting stories When God Winks opens your mind to the possibility that this universe still has secrets to be learned. KEEP AN OPEN MIND AND LOOK FOR COINCIDENCES IN YOUR LIFE!
