chantilly20's Full Review: All Time Greatest Hymns by "Tennessee" Ernie Ford
The first time I heard Tennessee sing was when I was a small child. My parents had several albums of his music.
This CD is all old Church Hymns. You could probably find them in any Church Song book. I started looking in our Church song Book to see how old some of these Hymns are. I found all but 3 songs on this CD. I will tell you later just how old some of these are. You would be surprised how old these songs are and that we all know them and still sing them in Church.
I mainly wanted to find a CD of Tennessee for my Father. I knew he liked him and I had just bought him a CD player. After listening to the CD I had to have a copy of it for myself. I like to listen to the old Hymns rather then some of the new Gospel music that's out there today.
Tennessee Ernie Ford passed away several years ago. He had a great voice and in some of these songs he brings out his personality.
If you do not know who Tennessee Ernie Ford was, here is a little bit about him.
Tennessee Ernie Ford was born in 1910 and died in 1991. He was an American country music singer, best known for his hit song "Sixteen Tons" Tennessee recorded albums of country music, gospel music, and patriotic music.
Born Ernest Jennings Ford near Bristol, Tennessee. To improve his singing, Ford took private voice lessons, then enrolled at the Cincinnati,Ohio Conservatory of Music. He worked for several radio stations in the South. He moved to California and got the nick name Tennessee. He was on the Grand Ole Opry. "Mule Train" was his first hit single in 1949. He hosted programs on the radio and had his own Show on NBC called "The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show". He had several other TV shows later.
He won a Grammy Award for Best Religious Recording. In 1974 the Academy of Country Music presented Ford with its Pioneer Award; in 1990 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was honored in 1984 with the Medal of Freedom, the United States's highest civilian honor.
This CD doesn't have much music in the back ground. You mostly hear just an Organ. He does have a choir. A men's and a ladies. It doesn't have a lot of music, just Tennessee and his choir singing.
