GENRE: Contemporary Christian, Christian Rock, Pop, almost alternative
WHO SHOULD BUY: Any one who appreciates rock based Christian music-young and old alike
dc talk has come a long way. I believe their first album came out in 1995 (self-titled). It was total rap. Great lyrics but those who tend to listen to contemporary Christian probably wouldn't buy it. I believe this is their third effort (after Free At Last).
This is a phenomenal album still. There are 10 songs on this CD and five are stellar, five are pretty good. I think everyone who appreciates rock-based Christian music should buy this album for their collection. Then buy a couple for friends young and old to give as gifts. It tells a wonderful message that forces you to face the issues of today--race relations, suicide and your walk with God.
On the downside, there are a couple silly clips that seem to detract from the experience a bit. No big deal, just kind of strange to include in such an awesome album.
Here are a few of my favorites and how they affected me:
* 'What have we become?' is easily the most challenging song on the album. With lyrics like, "A preacher shuns his brother cause his bride's a different color/and this is not acceptable his papa taught him so/it was love he'd been preaching, but this was overreaching." The church is in many areas the most segregated area in the country so this song touches many a nerve. The Bible tells us we are all God's children and we should learn to love the way God loves so why don't we do a better job of this? This tune is on the harder side of rock.
* 'Colored People' touches on the same subject of race relations. "By God's design, we are a skin kaleidoscope" and other lyrics challenge the listener to repent of their own sins in this area and come together under God's love. Very catchy tune that could easily play on any pop or rock station.
* 'What if I stumble?' addresses the fear we have of letting down the Lord in our walk. Yes, we'll still sin but there is a fear that we will be somebody else's stumbling block or bring shame to the family of God. Pretty much a rock ballad, it is easy for kids to sing along with the refrain.
* Other highlights include:
- incorporating 'Day by Day' lyrics from Jesus Christ Superstar into a very edgy rock song that makes you think about what you do on a day to day basis to build your relationship or just exist and float along with life.
-'In the Light' (written by Charlie Peacock) makes us think of how weak we are and how we always need a Savior because we will always sin and fall short of the glory of God.
Summary--these aren't going to be sung in too many churches for hymns but if you want a little harder edge with awesome music and lyrics you can't go wrong.
