I knew I would eventually have this soundtrack when I saw the movie, 'Remember the Titans'! It has taken me awhile but I was in the mood for a new CD the other night and found myself picking one up as it was on sale.
This is a great CD. The songs on it are all songs I sang, as a young teenager, back in the sixties. They are reminiscent of the times and they reflect the times well. The '60's was the peace era, the era of love. But it was also an era of the walls coming down and hatred and unrest. This is what the movie is about and this is what the music is about.
As you listen to this CD, the images from the movie play through your mind and come together to tell the story of the Titans and all the young people back then that were just plain tired of the race thing and wanted to get together and put it all behind them. They wanted peace. They wanted to get on the 'Peace Train'.
The Titans soundtrack has 12 songs and one is an instrumental. I will list them, the artists, some of the lyrics and comment on some of them as I go.
THE SONGS..................................................
1) AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH (Marvin Gaye,
Tammy Terrill)
Ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t no mountain low enough
Ain’t no river wide enough, that can keep me from getting’ to you. (Okay, so the grammar could be better!!)
2) SPIRIT IN THE SKY (Norman Greenbaum)
When I die and they lay me to rest, gonna go to the place that’s the best
When I lay me down to die, Goin' up to the Spirit in the sky.
Gonna set me up with the Spirit in the sky, that’s where I’m gonna go when I die.
When I die and they lay me to rest, gonna go to the place that’s the best
Prepare yourself, you know that you must, you gotta have a friend in Jesus.
So you know that when you die, He’s gonna recommend you to the Spirit in the sky
3) PEACE TRAIN (Cat Stevens)
Now I’ve been happy lately, thinkin’ about the good things to come
And I believe it could be.. something good has begun..
Oh I’ve been smilin’ lately, dreamin' about the world as one..
And I believe it could be, someday it's going to come...
(in other words, why can't we all live together in peace,
black and white alike?)
Peace Train’s sounding louder, Ride on the peace train
........., Come on the peace train
Now I've been cryin' lately..thinkin' about the world as it is...
Why must we go on hating, why can't we live and let live?
4) NA, NA, NA, NA,...KISS HIM GOODBYE (Steam)
He’ll never love you, the way that I love you…..
'cause if he did, NO, NO,…………………….
He wouldn't.....make you cry!
NA, NA,NA,NA….NA, NA,NA,NA….HEY, HEY, Goodbye (yes, there is romance in this movie)
5) LONG COOL WOMAN IN A BLACK DRESS (The Hollics)
I saw her headin' to the table,
She was a long, cool woman in a black dress......
(there were several in this movie!)
DUH, DUH, LA, LA, LA, WO-OH…..
6) I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER (Ike and Tina Turner)
Don’t ya wanta get higher? (as high as they were?!)
Baby, baby, let me light your fire…(heard enough?!!)
Lots of instrumental!! (the era of marijuana in a big way)
7) UP AROUND THE BEND (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
Bring a song and a smile for the banjo,
Better git while the gittin's good,
Hitch a ride to the end of the highway,
Where the neon's tied to wood.
Come on and ride the wind, we're going off around the bend,
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
(this song makes you want to dance!)
8) SPILL THE WINE (Eric Burdon & WAR)
(Dreaming in a field of tall grass about being in a
Hollywood movie!)
Spill the wine, dig that girl,
repeat, repeat......
9) A HARD RAIN'S A-GONNA FALL (Leon Russell)
10) ACT NATURALLY (Buck Owens)
They're gonna put me in the movies.
They're gonna make a big star outa me.
They'll make a film 'bout a man who's sad and lonely.
And all I hafta do is 'act naturally'.
The movie's gonna make me a big star.
Might win an Oscar, you never can tell.
The movie's gonna make me a big star.
'Cause I can play the part so well.
Repeat chorus.
11) EXPRESS YOURSELF (Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd
Street Rhythm Band)
12) TITAN'S SPIRIT (Score)..(Composed by Trevor Rabin)
The last several songs I'm not real familiar with. If you've seen the movie you know what a key part the music plays in helping to express the feeling of the era and tell the story.
