Having followed this mob for a while, I was interested to see how the addition of a human drummer would change their music.
On first listen there appears to be a crisper, tighter sound than of old. Not that previous efforts have been too sloppy - just a bit wayward!
Unfortunately, Add Insult To Injury appears to be a game of two halves. I reckon the first nine tracks provide some of the most refreshing new electropop I've heard in years. However, the last three meander to a rather damp conclusion.
Stand-out track for me is the humorously-titled Poke 'er 'ole. The backing beat overlaid with some manic electronica is a joy to behold. In my opinion, the version they recorded for John Peel's radio show is even better.
Peanuts For Eno is a duet of sorts. It sounds like a pre-coital chinwag between Stephen Hawking and his eager lover.
Also of note is Monster Bobby which manages to mix Gary Glitter's trademark beat with a football terrace chant.
It's nice to see that even with the musical progress they have made, Add N to X still rely heavily on seedy undertones strewn throughout.
This is the kind of music that would happen if The Cramps and Devo got trapped together in an Amsterdam brothel.
