moviesDMBfan's Full Review: Everyday by Dave Matthews Band
For Dave Matthews Band fans the long wait is finally over. February 27, 2001 brought the release of the band’s fourth studio album Everyday. Anticipation for the record hit during their summer tour where fans were introduced to a few new songs and the album’s first track “I Did It” hit radio waves early January and has received heavy rotation since. For those less familiar with this unquestionably talented band, they consist of lead singer and guitarist Dave Matthews, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, bass guitarist Steffan Lessard, and saxophonist Leroi Moore; a multiracial band with an unrelenting tour schedule and a sound all their own. They joined in 1991 and started playing in bars and grew a massive college following which later grew to a fan base that sells out stadiums in a matter of mere minutes. The band’s previous albums include the multi platinum Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash, and Before These Crowded Streets, as well as three live albums Live At Red Rocks, Live at Luther College with Tim Reynolds, and Listener Supported.
The original street date for Everyday was slated for late 2000, but Dave’s dissatisfaction with the final product sent them back to the studio with power producer Glen Ballard. In a matter of weeks Dave and the guys created what they describe as “our best work to date”. I think your fans may just agree.
Everyday never strays from the quintessential poetic lyrics that is Dave Matthews’ music, or the eclectic sound that each band member contributes. The only difference present here is that Dave has decided to don an electric guitar rather than his acoustic. Like most fans we were a little hesitant to hear the change, but if anything, it’s a great artistic move on Matthews’ part. It’s not so much that it changes their sound, but it definitely sets Everyday apart from the rest. The 12 track disc includes an array of crowd pleasers “I Did It” (“I did it/ Do you think I’ve gone too far? / I did it/ Guilty as charged”, “We’ll make a bomb of love/ And blow it again”), a guitar duet with legend Carlos Santana on the track “Mother Father”, not to mention songs destined to be summer tour favorites including “The Space Between”, “If I Had It All”, “So Right”, “When The World Ends”, and “Everyday”. But it’s the albums unrequited love songs, respectively, that stand out the most. “Angel”, (“But I confess/ It’s lonely far from you/ Even when you’re right by me/ It’s only why I wait for you”) is reminiscent to their previous love song, not to mention their biggest hit, “Crash Into Me”. The outstanding “Sleep to Dream Her” and “Fool To Think”(“Was I a fool to think/ The way you looked at me/I swear you did/ But you looked away too quick”) are some of the highlights on the album. But, come to think of it, there is not one bad track on the entire thing each song has something to offer. Their sounds and lyrics are unconventional, but it’s that alone that makes them so great. As a devoted fan of the Dave Matthews Band who waited anxiously for their new work, I realize the wait was completely worth it. The Dave Matthews Band will be hitting the road again for a Spring/ Summer Tour across the U.S. and Everyday is currently available in stores, it’s an album that should be added to every music lover’s and DMB fan’s collection.
