adnetjm's Full Review: Wallace Sife - The Loss Of A Pet Books
Personal bereavement for a beloved pet very often is far more intense than perceived by others. The grief and confusion that follow a cherished companion animal need to be better comprehended. The pain is so real that it must not be belittled or discounted by even the conscious mourner. That is why this book “The Loss of a Pet is a must read for those who may be facing this.
Last night I put my Bubba to rest. There are many mental and emotional things I am going through today.
I knew this was going to be a new thing to me since I never lost an animal companion before. So I bought this book “The Loss of a Pet”, by Wallace Sife, PhD. I got it at a discount at a bargain online store for about $7.
I received it the day before which did not give me much time to read it through but what I did read did help about not to belittle each other by saying things like, “don’t you feel like crying?’ or stop crying like a baby“.
I say to realize you are a humanoid and feelings cannot be rationalized, sometimes they just flow on the waves of the information your body receives. I say let it flow as long as it’s not violent. I am talking about the real feelings that you know you can not control. The feelings of life’s oceans pushing against the sand.
Here is a list of the chapters because there are so many levels to our emotions.
The human pet bond.
The grieving process.
Shock and disbelief.
Anger, alienation and distancing.
Denial Guilt
Depression.
Resolution.
Other kinds of loss.
Another Pet?
Children and the death of a pet.
Euthanasia.
Final arrangements.
The book is good. I suggest getting it way before so you can prepare as far as the market will let you. I mean there are numerous funeral homes and such now days. There also is a fourteen pages of listings of homes in the back of the book.
On the real side I feel kind of like a lost puppy myself today. I took my coffee and the dreaded first walk down to the beach without him and cried to the seaweed air. I haven’t taken a shower yet because ;..( he is usually there waiting for me by the door. But, I will don’t sweat it ‘smile’.
I have a very interesting story to go with this:
About eight years ago Bubba was lost for ten days. We looked all over our area and ended up finding him in a place 10 miles away in little a beach community. There were these little streets with a few streets of well kept bungalous and birds chirping. Right down the block was the beach. The area my son found him on is the same block we end up buying our first house, of which we are now in contract.
So I asked my son when we get the house to come down and see if it’s the same house he found Bubba at those fright filled eight years ago. He says it was an old lady, all I know right now is that the house I am buying was an old lady’s house and she passed away recently.
