| dramastef's Full Review: Robin Currie - The Baby Bible Storybook |
Each year for Christmas, Santa Claus brings presents for our children and leaves them under the tree, much like many American homes. A couple years ago, my husband and I tried to figure a way of keeping our childrens interest in the reason we celebrate Christmas, but at a level a child could relate to. We decided to put up small trees in each of our childrens rooms, let them make the ornaments, and on Christmas morning, there is always one present that is closer to the real reason we celebrate Christmas than the Fisher-Price Cruise and Crawl Gym that is under the family room tree.
This year, my son found The Baby Bible Storybook. I have been searching for a very long time for a Bible that I liked for my children. I wanted the Illustrations and writing to be good. I wasnt asking too much, or was I? It took me this long (3 years) to find this The Baby Bible Storybook which fulfills my need for a Baby Bible. Now I still need to find one for my Preschooler. But I digress.
The Book Itself:
This is a 5 inch by 7 inch board book, but because there are 48 pages, it is a bit thicker than most board books (a little over 3 inches). Each two page spread is similar: The left page has the stories, and the right page is an illustration.
The Stories:
Written by Robin Currie, each story is told in a way that both captivates and involves your child. Of course, my infant son is still too little to understand or join in the activities that Currie suggests, but we still read every night and my three year old happily picks up the slack.
Each story is told in three or four sentences, each sentence followed by a small activity, each story followed by a short prayer. An example of one page/story:
Moses talks to God
Taken from Exodus 2-3
God wanted Moses to do a special job. At first Moses said no.
Shake your head no.
God said Moses, I will be with you. Dont be afraid.
Then Moses was not afraid. He told God he would do the special job. Moses said yes.
Nod your head yes.
God will help you do any job He gives you to do. You are special to Him.
Dear God, help me be a good helper. Amen.
The stories included in this book are from both the Old and New Testaments and include stories from Genesis, Ruth, the Gospels, Daniel, Kings and many more.
The Illustrations:
The illustrations by Cindy Adams are charming. Each character is a rounded, happy character. The suns have smiley faces in them, the people have rosy cheeks and there are a lot of cute critters. She has also illustrated quite a few other Baby Bible Storybooks, including More Baby Bible Stories, Baby Bible: Teach Me to Sing and Pray, Baby Bible Christmas Storybook, Baby Bible: Stories About Jesus and Baby Bible: The Lord's Prayer.
Final Thoughts and Recommendations:
As I said before, my son is too young to appreciate the fact that his mother and sister read to him every night, but it wont be long before hes joining his sisters clapping and nodding and yelling as the activities in this book instruct. We usually read a story or two from this book for my son, and then let him chew on the pages as we read another book or two for my daughter. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for your young child. Being a board book, its ready for the youngest of your clan. Being a Bible story book, its ready for all your young children.
This can be purchased new at Amazon.com for $10.49. I also found it at Half.com for as little as $2.00.
