Re: author's voice? (Reply to this comment)

You bring up a good point Uranium Orchids. This book is in the form of essays. No screen shots, like in Jakob Nielsen's HOMEPAGE USABILITY book.
Why? Because this book is not about web design. It is about text and writing principles. Nick does quote portions of text used in various web sites, but the sites themselves are not presented in screen shots. There are some tables or text entry boxes shown.
I'm not sure why my review would only get you to the point of thinking "Maybe I'll look for this next time I'm in the book store" unless you are not involved in web writing or web analysis.
Not everyone will read my review and immediately order it online from Barnes & Noble or whatever.
But web writers and web designers will definitely miss out if they pass this by. Even web surfers and web workers will be intrigued about the principles of effective web writing. Maybe some will think, "so that's why that web site is so unusable. I thought I was stupid. But it's the online copy that's stupid. What a relief!"

author's voice? (Reply to this comment)

Your review gives me a great overview of the kind of book this is, but I don't know what the author's voice is like, or the format in which his ideas are presented (long essays? skimmable lists? Screenshots/exampls from websites that work?). Ideally, I'd like a review that makes me feel informed enough to click the "buy now" button on Amazon. Your details are good, but only get me to the "I should look for this book next time I'm at the bookstore" level.
