Meatloaf? Glamorous?

Written: Aug 28 '01
Pros:Amazingly tasty recipes; wonderful serving suggestions
Cons:Not lowfat; Recipes can require some effort; no photographs
The Bottom Line: One bite, and you'll understand!

You bet! If you mean the Market Street Meatloaf (borrowed from 72 Market Street in Venice, California) that is presented here.

I will tell you that everything I have ever served out of this cookbook has gotten rave reviews, and pleas for the recipes.

I bought this cookbook about 10 years ago, and it is still my favorite (albeit with a few stains on the pages and a bit worse for the wear!). Sheila Lukins and Julee Rosso have many friends in the food business, and have collected many of their friends' specialties from assorted restaurants and assembled them in one place.

They recipes are arranged logically, beginning with hors d'ouevres in the front, working through brunch-type foods, salads, eggs, meats, Italian and French sections, through ice cream type desserts, chocolate, and cakes. There is a back section with recipes for the sauces and stocks they call for elsewhere throughout the book.

The great parts are the feature content boxes, where they explain a little more fully the uses for herbs, which wines go with which foods, the cuts of meat, sandwich ideas (which foods go great with which breads and garnishes...), and the like. I've learned a lot about cooking from reading the feature boxes.

My favorites include the aforementioned meatloaf, Chocolate Bread Pudding with Brandy Custard Sauce, Salmon Phyllo Pillows, Vegetable Bundles, Cinnamon Apple Beignets, and Cornish Hens Shoemaker's Style.

You may recognize Julee Rosso's name. In addition to her books with Sheila Lukins, she also writes a food column in Parade magazine included with most Sunday papers.

This cookbook ran me around $19.95 at Crate and Barrel brand new.
