azirish's Full Review: Lin Wellford - The Art of Painting Animals on Rock...
I have a new passion, rocks. Yep, I think my Guardian Angel felt like I was making too many trips to the local Casino and felt I needed a hobby, ha.
My daughter had been shopping at the local craftmart and she saw a book by an artist named Linn Wellford called The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks. Well, as I always do with a new endeavor I bought the whole store out, paints, sprays, anything that wasn't nailed down.
I bought all of Ms Welford's books, Painting Rocks with Flowers, cottages, and animals. I saw a glint of enthusiasm in my daughter's eyes so I bought her the whole nine yards too, the works. She petered out when she saw she had a thimble full of artistic ability. My grandson, who is eight however got into it and did a rose on a rock, it was beautiful. He has a full blooded Navajo dad so the artistic ability came from him.
I went to Safeway to get groceries and saw a mini-rock quarry by the store. I said to myself, self, there are some good size rocks, give it a try. I picked up a rock with a hump and threw it in the car. I'm a cop and I don't even know if stealing a generic rock is a crime, ha. I will find out when I look in the rearview mirror and see those dreaded lights, ha. Ya see, I get intimidated by those lights too!
I got my groceries and took my stolen property home. I followed Linn Wellford's directions, which are basic, and I created a Mother cat and her kitten. My next project was a Leopard. I even pulled wild animal pictures off the internet. I swear, I am really getting excited about this and it takes a lot to get my adrenalin flowing after being both a firefighter and cop for over twenty years. I even think I am good at it!
The book costs $16.00 on Amazon.com. The shipping is fast and I had my book dealing with animals in a few days. The other books on flowers and cottages on rocks I got at the craftmart. They were a bit more but only a dollar or two.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BEGIN TO START :
BASIC ACRYLIC PAINTS, COLORS ON ANIMALS YOU ENJOY
A 1" WIDE PAINT BRUSH
A MEDIUM TAPERED BRUSH
A NARROW SCRIPT LINER BRUSH
A PENCIL TO TRACE OR A PIECE OF CHALK

The good thing about this hobby is after you buy the acrylic paints and brushes, your rocks are cheap, ha.
Linn Welford takes you step by step from basecoat to finish. There are all kinds of examples of her work and even advice about starting your own business or showing your work at craft festivals.
There are projects as simple as a turtle or as difficult as a possum.
I enjoyed this book so much I wrote a sheriff in Carroll County Arkansas where she lives to try and find an e-mail for her to write a thank you note. After some internet surfing a found an e-mail for her on an website. There is also a website for rock painters on yahoo.com.
Go to the riverbed, get a rock and a few acrylic paints and try it out, you will surprise yourself. Also, buy Ms. Linn Welford's book, it is the best on painting on rocks.
