jasonwej's Full Review: John David Jackson - Classical Electrodynamics
I used this textbook in a graduate level electrodynamics class, and it is a struggle to understand the detailed mathematics. Jackson is no doubt a brilliant physicist, and his derivations are precise and rigorous. However, the material covered is not as applicable to real-world problems as could be hoped, and the problems in the text are so horrendously abstract and difficult to solve that they lend more to testing advanced mathematics skills than physical insight to an electrodynamics framework. This book is a standard in most graduate physics programs, well-known and feared in required core classes, and I know that several astrophysics majors found it of some use, but I suggest searching for another textbook for advanced electrodynamics instruction.
