bwyckoff1's Full Review: Richard Paul Evans - The Christmas Box: Anniversar...
The holidays will be here before you know it. I personally try to do all my shopping before December, primarily because I do not like competing with hundreds of people in malls for that spectacular one of a kind present. Perhaps a simpler holiday is in order. A book that can become a Christmas classic. The Christmas box by author Richard Paul Evans may be such a book. What is interesting is that the book is listed as a fiction book, but when I delved into the author’s background, much of the story is factual.
This is a very small book that can be read in less than one hour, but it has a powerful message hidden in the book. Small, but mighty. Many who have read the story have been moved to tears. Tears of recognition and hopefully time to rectify moments lost.
The author published and marketed this book on his own. After numerous rejections from publishers, but critical acclaim from anyone who read the story, the author was determined to get the book on store shelves and accomplished this lofty dream. It was originally written as a gift to his children, but has turned out to be a gift for anyone who receives it. The price is 12.95 and can be found at any book store.
The story line involves a family of Richard, his wife Keri and daughter Jenna. Jenna was three years old, but still in a crib. Holidays approaching and a cramped one-bedroom apartment cause the author and family to seek out a solution. Richard was an owner of a tuxedo rental firm at the time, and money was tight and so was Richards’s time for family and friends. There was a perfect solution on the ritzy side of town. A widow in a mansion needed an individual to serve brunch and dinner and Kerri felt that would be an easy assignment. Richard would be in charge of landscaping and to mow the lawn. In exchange, a portion of the mansion and all the electric bills taken care of. Not bad when you consider the alternatives. The story line wraps the reader around a strange story of a magic music box buried deep in an attic amongst a dust wrapped crib and other remnants of a life in the past. Mary, the widow in the tale, has a lesson to teach Richard. A lesson about being too busy for bedtime stories, too busy for simple tinker toy afternoons and being tucked in bed. It is a lesson that is needed to be taught to many too busy parents. Mary’s life in the past with her husband Richard must have been exciting. Trinkets and items from foreign junkets decorated the mansion and filled Mary’s life. It isn’t until Mary’s impending death that we learn the secrets hidden in the Christmas box. A secret I will leave for the reader to uncover.
I think this would be a lovely addition to any literary gift basket you plan on giving this holiday season. Cuddle up with cup of eggnog, chestnuts popping over the fireplace fire and the Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evans.
