While I agree with most of the review and did not like the second Parable novel as well as the first I must disagree somewhat with the critique of the religious aspect. I share the distaste for organized religion but don't mind philosophy or spiritual thought, if you will. In that regard the Earthseed idea is quite interesting and I enjoyed having Ms. Butler work it out more thoroughly.
It should also be noted that since the Earthseed philosophy has as its stated goal the spreading of the human race throughout the universe (a goal one can embrace or be horrified by depending on one's view of the human race) it would be absolutely necessary for those who accepted the Earthseed idea to organize and cooperate with each other or the goal would never be accomplished.
This distinquishes Earthseed from most other organized religions as they have no goal other than the stated one of worshipping their particular vision of God and the unstated one of imposing their views of morality on everyone else.
Earthseed, in contrast, requires folk to accept one another and tolerate their differences in order to accomplish a goal that is greater than any one individual. I believe this contrast of Earthseed and most of the world's current religions is at least part of Ms. Butler's point.
