Pros: All the music videos. Some inspiring material deftones make it their own sound multiple themes
Cons: Some might think this sounds wimpy or Team sleep similarities will annoy. Might be pricey
The Bottom Line: The Deftones do not sell out on some dumb greatest hits album, but rather let you see a side that is not shown too often, you need this
bequietnddrive's Full Review: B-Sides & Rarities [PA] by Deftones
Okay, so at the minute im sitting here, drinking stella artois, checking my emails and the deftonesworld.com fansite, checking for new updates when all of a sudden i saw something immediatley catch my eye. The key words, DEFTONES: B-SIDES AND RARITIES full album stream at myspace.com, basically i almost spat my booze all over the screen, so i am reviewing a deftones rarities album, which is about to be released in four days time, if u want to hear it before its release, checkout http://www.myspace.com/deftones before the day of release, and you can listen to the full album, so is it any good? Well, let me start by saying ive never heard this side of the deftones before and hearing it seems to make me feel a bit, well weird, but a good sort of weird if that type of weird exists.
Okay, so most of the material on the album is not original songs by the deftones, they are covers, but having listened to some of the originals i have to say that the deftones seem to make these songs their own, just because of one thing, they are the deftones. Chino actually properly sings, which for one part is scary and two parts, exciting to see someone who seems to have so much anger pent up inside. However you might be thinking of singing and crooning on epics like be quiet and drive (far away) and digital bath but no. He actually sings like as if he was part of an orchestra.
Most of the songs here seem to be composed of electronica, industrial metal riffs with acoustic action thrown in, strangely enough B-REEL from Cypress hill seems to lend a hand on the song black moon which is interesting. There are also acoustic original deftones material of Change (in the house of flies) as well as digital bath and be quiet and drive (far away) which all sound like new songs recorded by entirely different bands, the latter, sounding like a radiohead song belonging to Kid A radioheads shared thought of a masterpiece. There are 14 songs in all totalling well over the 60 minute barrier, and as a bonus, they have thrown in all of their music videos as well as some rare live footage of yesteryears concerts. which is nice. A stand out of similarity is the way chino tries to mime Morrisey of The Smiths fame with Please Please Please let me get what i want, with deftones added flair of stephs guitar persona.
Sinatra is a nice and heavy version of rhe band helmets thought of mind, because of its thriving riff lines, and strong melody, and also there is a revise version of Teenager, the layed back and acoustic heart of the White Pony album, which leads us to believe that we always look back on our youth in the form of inncoent crushes and love, thats why as we get older, we learn to realise that we can learn from the youth, simply because of the simplicty no worry charsima that earily teenagers have, a thrilling and moving conversion. Probably better than the original
Well i have decided to give this album four out of five stars, because not only do u get some rare songs but u get the entire video collection, which is worth the money alone, and another reason i give this a thumbs up high score is because of the fact i have gift vouchers for Virgin megastore which means i will be getting this album for next to nothing, MWA HAH HA HA HA HAAAAAH.
Basically i cant wait for the deftones to bring out the 2006 release which according to Chino has some complex time signatures with tool-esque soundscapes, well lets hope they keep it hard, heavy and tight, until that album comes out, do Deftones a favour and shell out on a valid and interesting all round essential deftones package, cause beleive me we all need some gawd damn new material from this fine band.
A metallic rush of guitars and thundering drums, Deftones music both epitomizes the hard-and-fast glory of post-grunge alt-metal and blows it wide ope...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
