cletta1201's Full Review: Sleeping in the Nothing [PA] by Kelly Osbourne
We all know that the major portion of the music industry relies on image to sell records. Artists are often oversexed and under talented but this is the kind of formula that has worked so well for so long, it continues to be shoved down all of our consumer hungry throats.
Personal music industry bias aside, there is a certain industry aesthetic that almost always equates a platinum album. Kelly Osbourne may not have that aesthetic, but the girls definitely got moxie. So frequently artists fear the repercussions of having not only their fans, but their record labels turn thi which results in the release of haphazard albums that nobody, not even the artists enjoys. And while you might still think of her as the obnoxious child of rocker Ozzy Osbourne , her second album is a really ambitious attipt at dance music that comes off surprisingly well.
Sleeping In The Nothing is 32:44 of really solid dance tracks. With an underlying electriconica/pop sound, everything about Sleeping is heads and shoulders above Osbournes cloying debut. "One Word", the albums lead single found itself as the number one single on dance charts across the country. Here, Osbourne recognizes her vocal limits and her hushed sound blends perfectly with the tracks European synth feel.
What Sleeping isnt is deep, and dance music doesnt really need to be. Thats not to say that the albums varied subjects are vapid but the overall result is a fun album. "Redlight" is about spinning out of control but it begs you to groove. "Save Me" is a cry for help but its equal parts sing-song and dancefloor grinding goodness.
The albums major appeal for me is that it feels like an official attipt at Kelly Osbourne doing and being what she wants to be. "Uh Oh" and "Dont Touch Me" have the cheeky, badarsed feel that youd expect from Osbourne but none of it tries so hard that it becomes trite. In fact the latter is a song about date rape where Osbourne warns: The moral of the story, to make myself clear / Is that all you rapist @ssh0les better run with fear / I would think twice before your next date / Cause you'll just end up someone's b1tch in cellblock eight. Uh huh girl.
The albums only viable misstep is the clown car feeling Edge Of Your Atmosphere which despite its musical failure, is quite well written.
- Final Thoughts -
Sleeping In The Nothing isnt mapping the human genome, but it most certainly will make you feel like dancing or at the very least smile.
