Pros: Great sound quality, 3xCD loader, dual tape deck, AUX input, Excellent value and looks wonderful
Cons: Not much! No auto-reverse on the tape deck
The Bottom Line: The combination of low price with excellent sound and features make it unbeatable. Also it is a system with grown-up looks! Try it out!

| stevegrant's Full Review: Aiwa NSX-AJ310 Shelf System |
My current CD system was getting very long in the tooth but had been brilliant throughout it's twelve, yes TWELVE, years of use. We had a bit of money to spend on getting a new unit, so after a bit of shopping around I found this little beauty of a product.
As the previous reviewer has mentioned it has all you'll basically need - triple CD loader, dual tape, AM/FM tuner, aux input and full remote control. Having an aux input, which is quite unusual at this price range, is very useful so you can use a MiniDisc player or your TV straight through the system. Also the remote control is actually full having all the functions on the handset that are on the main unit, and not just the ones the manufacturer thinks you need. One surprise though, was that I thought the tape desks where able auto-reverse - well they don't! This doesn't bother me too much as my old system didn't either - so what I didn't have I won't miss!
All this is good stuff, but what does it sound like?! Well in a word, lovely! Before I tried it I was expecting the standard "youth" sound - thumphing bass and not much else. And yes this will give you that if you set it that way, but out-of-the-box I found that it produces a warm inviting sound that really surprised me! The sound can be altered in a couple of extra ways with bass (T-Bass) and treble (BBE) enhancements along with the more usual equaliser. Personally I have kept these extras set to their lowest settings which gives all the music I've played so far a great tonal quality. The stereo image that it produces is also very good, with excellent separation on all the sources - a good test of this was listening to a radio play on FM.
Lastly, it looks really good! Other systems that are around the same price look really, well, sad. They seem to be produced without a hit of style and with LOADS of flashing lights. The people at Aiwa were obviously having a good day when they designed the case for this. I doubt it will win awards but it is good to look at but it doesn't try to be brash and shout "LOOK AT ME!!" like a spoilt teenager! The main unit looks very at home on the table in my sitting room with the speakers on the floor.
It looks like Aiwa have got their act together and produced a great unit at an unbeatable price. Go and have a listen in the shops - you'll be surprised.
