| dkozin's Full Review: Panasonic PV-DF2700 27 inch TV/VCR/DVD Combo TV |
The Panasonic PV-DF2700 is a complete solution that includes a 27” TV, DVD player and a VCR. Having all the devices in one case saves you from having to connect separate TV, DVD and VCR and using several remotes to control them. Plus you get a 2-tuner PIP.
Picture Quality
Although the picture quality is excellent during the DVD playback and as good as it gets for VHS at all speeds, the TV in general has too much red and comes with picture set to the brightest position with most contrast.
TV
The 27” TV has 2-tuner Picture-In-Picture (PIP) and features distortion-free flat picture tube. It has 3-line digital comb filter for better separation of chrominance and luminance from composite video signal. It also includes a MTS stereo tuner and stereo speakers.
The picture has three settings: Standard (contrast set to the max, picture looks too vivid), Movie (all settings at the middle setting) and Night (less bright). The settings can be customized for brightness, contrast, hue, color, tint. It seems to me that the good setting is somewhere between Standard and Movie with the contrast set to about 3/4.
Style
The DF2700 is definitely stylish with absolutely flat screen, silver finish and sharp angles. The remote control is backlit and looks nice; it has a lot of button for one remote, but allows you control all devices using one common onscreen menu.
DVD
The DVD player of the unit has a tray that opens and closes fast, but looks more flimsy than Panasonic’s standalone DVD players’. It features usual for Panasonic fast operation and five slow / five fast scan speeds. It also has zoom function and virtual surround sound as well as other, virtually standard, DVD features.
VCR
The 4-head VCR has VCR Plus+, program search and commercial skip. But you can’t copy a DVD program to a tape, not even a non-copy-protected DVD. The VCR features 3 speeds (SP, LP and SLP) and Hi-Fi stereo sound unit excellent picture quality (for VHS) and sound.
There is also noiseless slow motion (thanks to the 4-head design) and still mode as well as double-speed playback.
Inputs
The unit has a headphone jack, composite video input and analog stereo audio input on the front panel. The rear panel has an S-Video input, composite video input, analog stereo input, an RF input, stereo output and optical digital output. But there is no composite video or S-Video output.
Remote
The supplied remote control allows you control all devices (TV, VCR, DVD), and is backlit. The remote is relatively easy to use. The device’s menu system allows you control TV, VCR and DVD as well as other functions from one common onscreen menu. It can also control cable boxes and DSS.
Bottom Line
The DF2700 is a good solution for someone who wants stylish, easy-to-setup/use 27” TV+DVD+VCR device. However, I would get Panasonic RV31 DVD player for $180, Panasonic 4621 VCR for $120 and spend remaining $900 on a good 36” or 32” TV with cables. Unless you can get DF2700 for less than $1,200.
