| kenray's Full Review: Rio Volt SP100 Personal CD Player |
This past Friday I went on a weekend trip to another state. On Thursday I decided I wanted a portable MP3 player to take along. After consulting Epinions.com to find out about some of the models out there, I went to my local Best Buy to see what they had.
I compared this model to two other models here on Epinions. This one did not have the best reviews, so when I went to the store, I was actually looking for a different model.
However, when I got there, and was able to look at each one in person, this one just seemed to be a better deal. I realized that I might be taking a chance going with this one because it had less favorable reviews.
Should I buy this MP3 player?
If you're looking for a player, as I was, chances are you're in a hurry - you don't want to waste your time reading unnecessary information. So here are the facts:
I used this player on the plane during my trip - it never skipped.
While at home the day before, I tested it by shaking and tapping it, and it never skipped - except if I tapped it immediately after it started playing - I presume that it needs time to buffer the music before the skip protection can do anything. Once it was 5-10 seconds into a song, I was unable to make it skip. (I didn't shake it for 30+ seconds - let's be realistic...)
The unit sounds good, and was plenty loud enough to use on the plane. There were times I had to turn it down a bit...
It's a very nice, hi-tech looking unit - if you care about that.
It seems plenty durable to me. I don't feel that it is cheaply constructed, as at least one other opinion here states.
One of the coolest features it has, one that I've never seen in a portable, is that it reads ahead from the disk, storing the music into memory, then the disk stops spinning, and it will then read more from the disk in about 20 or 30 seconds, after the buffer empties. This is one sure way to keep it from skipping! Great idea! (note: I've only played MP3 disks in it, but I'm sure this only applies to compressed music - I don't think regular CD's could be buffered that way)
It comes with a nice case, and with the supplied remote, you can put it in the case, and run it from the remote, never having to take it out of the case. That was great for me on the plane. I just set it in the pocket in the seat, and let it run.
The navigation is a bit strange, and did take me a while to figure out. This is probably it's weakest point, as I'm usually able to figure out how to work things without a manual - in this case, even the manual didn't help! I just had to keep playing till I figured it out. It's really not that bad though. It's just not as intuitive as it should be.
Overall, I would recommend this unit for anyone who is looking for a player that works well and sounds good.
I'm glad I bought it!
