| artiste's Full Review: Toshiba PDR-M81 Digital Camera |
Just when photographers were getting used to three megapixel digital cameras, Manufacturers have produced cameras with 4 megapixels. Olympus, Sony and Toshiba have upped the ante on megapixels from three to four.
This is a point and shoot and it costs $700. I don't think the upgrade makes that much of a difference between four and three megapixels. However, high megapixels means more details especially for printing out large 8 by 10 prints from digital images. Light sensitive elements on the CCD are less sensitive. The result os that the camera produces more images with more megapixels and more detail, but with more noise. Pictures comes out sharp. Noise is more in low light shots. The daylight and flash images are every bit as good as the predecessors.
PDR weighs about 8 ounces. It is small because it has a built in zoom lens. The lens covers a 7 to 21 mm range. The lens operates alittle slow and it is not too sensitive to light. It shows up in a poor autofocus performance. In fact it failed to lock the focus in dim lighting.
The camera also has a small 1.5 inch screen. It is very bright and has an anti reflective coating. But if you squint or have poor vision, you won't be able to see it too well.
With the two flaws in screens size and slow lens, this is still the best camera Toshiba has on the market. The four megapixel image sensor gives sharp images, very good color and good balance.
I like this camera because it allows full control over exposure and focusing. It also operates in a simple point and shoot mode. The onscreen menu system gives lots of shooting option. The screen indicates at all times lens aperture, shutter speed and flash mode. You can choose not to see all this information with the touch of a button which will remove it.
This is a new camera in the category of four megapixels.
It is priced at$700 and produces sharp colorful images with lots of detail. It is recommended.
