Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Exciting and thrilling story, action packed, eye catching illustrations.
Cons:Depiction of Germans passé, not as many comic situations as in other Asterix books.
The Bottom Line:
This Asterix adventure is among the most exciting. However, it also does not have as many great comic situations and this comic book is a little bit anti-German.
Asterix and Obelix (his best friend) live in a small village in Roman occupied Gaul 50 BC. It is the only village which has been able to resist the Roman army. This is because of a magic potion which gives the villagers super human strength. I can add that Obelix fell in the potion as a kid which gave him super human strength permanently. The potion is brewed by the village Druid Getafix according to a secret recipe.

Asterix (Astérix le Gaulois) is a comic book series which has sold in several hundreds of millions of copies around the world and it has been translated into more than a hundred languages. As a kid I used to read the ones that were available at the time (in Swedish) and I loved them. Today my kids read them in English and they love these books as well. Fortunately all of the books in the series have been translated into English. The Asterix series is written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo.
Asterix and the Goths
In this adventure Getafix, the village druid, is kidnapped by Goths while attending the annual druids conference in the forest of the Carnutes. Luckily Asterix and Obelix accompanied Getafix to the forest and they soon discover what happened. I should add that Asterix and Obelix, not being druids, were not allowed into the forest. The intention of the Goths is to make Getafix make magic potion for them which would allow them to conquer both Gaul and the Roman Empire.
Asterix and Obelix cross into Germania (where the Goths live) disguising themselves as Roman legionnaires and later as Goths. The Goths takes Getafix to their chieftain Metric who calls for a Gaulish-Gothic translator, Rhetoric, who is threatened by execution if he does not get Getafix to brew the magic potion. Things certainly looks bleak for Getafix, the Gauls and also the Roman empire.
My thoughts and opinions on Asterix and the Goths
The Asterix comic books are clean, lighthearted fun, and they typically feature good stories and that is true also for this adventure. What is different with this story is that the Asterix books are typically about fighting the Romans while defending the village or other people around the world from the Romans. However, in this comic book the villains are primarily the Goths who are depicted as barbaric, war like, power hungry, cruel, and worse than the Romans. The helmets used by the Goths look like the helmets used by the Germans in the First World War and the Goths are clearly intended to represent the Germans. When the Goths swear skulls, fists, and even swastikas are shown. The story clearly displays anti-German sentiment. On the other hand it was written in 1975 which was not too long after World War II.
The book still features some lighthearted situational comedy and the story is engaging. In fact it might be one of the more exciting and thrilling of the Asterix books. The illustrations are action packed, colorful, and humorous and eye catching. It is by no means a bad Asterix book. However, in my opinion this book is not among the best of the Asterix books. As mentioned the depiction of the Germans is passé, and the comic situations are also not as frequent as in some other Asterix books. I can recommend it but not as the first Asterix you buy, because there are better ones. I give this book four stars out of five.
The Asterix books I have give five stars so far are the following
Asterix and the Normans
Obelix and Company
Asterix in Belgium
Asterix in Corsica
Asterix and the Roman Agent
Asterix and the Magic Carpet
Asterix and the soothsayer
Asterix and the Banquet
Asterix and Obelix all at Sea
Asterix and the Great Crossing
