Alcon Opti-Free PureMoist Multi-Purpose Disinfection Solution: Kiss Those Protein and Calcium Deposits Goodbye

Written: May 26, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Easy to use, non-stinging, reasonably priced, multi purpose.
Cons:Might not work for everyone.
The Bottom Line: Suffer from protein or calcium deposits? PureMoist Multi-Purpose helped me with my deposit issues without redness or stinging.

After giving up on wearing contacts for a couple years I decided it was time to get another eye exam and get some disposable lenses. Much to my horror I hear the "B" word [bifocal] used during the exam. No. I don't do bifocals. The sad fact is that if I want to wear contact lenses I am going to have to get reading glasses if I want to see anything within arms reach. That means the laptop, remote control and newspaper. One of the things that I dreaded about getting lenses again was the calcium deposits; that's where the Alcon Opti-Free PureMoist came into play. My optometrist told that Re-Nu was probably one of the worst cleaning and storage solutions I could use; he recommended PureMoist. Normally when someone recommends something like this they have a vested interest in it but he said that it's the only solution he uses and the only one that he lets his kids use with their contact lenses.

Normally my contact lenses start to feel scratchy within two weeks and you can actually see the tiny little white balls on the surface of the lens. That's the calcium deposits. Not only do they make your eyes feel dry but they can also feel scratchy which leads to a lot of eye rubbing and subsequent irritation. My optometrist told me to take some disposable lens cases with me; when I was done with the two weeks of wear he wanted me to bring them back in so he could look at them. He looked at them and said that there were definitely deposits on them but because of my prescription the daily wear lenses wouldn't be an option so we stuck with the original plan of the two week lenses. I have been using PureMoise Multi Purpose Disinfection Solution since I got the temporary lenses and then started getting the two week packs.

This is easy to use and he recommended that I clean them daily as well as try to rub the lens a little. The old school "don't rub your lenses to clean them" mentality was no longer needed. Per the box it "cleans, reconditions, rinses, disinfects and stores" your lenses but that's only if it's used properly. The HydraGlyde property does make wearing them a little nicer but if you normally have sore or itchy eyes or have allergies this won't really do much for you. One of the real pros, at least for me, is that it has a disinfection agent in it that helps to kill bacteria. That can mean less of a chance of an eye infection but it isn't a guarantee that you won't get one so you need to wash your hands any time you are going to handle your lenses. I had no stinging or redness with this so I decided to switch to it permanently.

I used to use an enzyme tablet once a week or once every two weeks to try to get my lenses clean; even with the monthly wear ones that I had, I still had problems with them feeling like there was sand on them. So far, after two rotations of lenses, the PureMoist seems to be working perfectly. My optometrist did tell me that it might not be "the one" for me and there were other products I could try. If you have calcium or protein deposit issues, this is something that you should consider trying. I can't guarantee that it will work for everyone but I had some really bad deposits and PureMoist seems to help prevent the deposits from adhering to the lens. This costs about the same price as Re-Nu and the bottle that I purchased lasted through two rotations and there's still a decent amount left. Wal-Mart has the best price on this, about eight dollars a bottle.

You are going to want to check the box when you buy it; make sure that the top and bottom are both sealed. When you open the box check the inner imprint seal on the bottle too. Some stores have adopted a strict HBA return policy to avoid tampering and product switching but that doesn't mean that every store is going to have that in place to protect consumers. Your eyes and vision are valuable; take a couple seconds to make sure that you are getting something that hasn't been tampered with or used. I would be extremely leery about buying something like this from a third party reseller because you won't know the expiration date, condition of the bottles, if they've been exposed to weathering or any other things that could compromise the integrity of the solution.
