Pros:effective, inexpensive, versatile
Cons:slight rubber smell
The Bottom Line: This is a great attachment that is a must have in my opinion.
We made a home gym complete with a bench that came with a lat tower. One of the attachments we bought is a Triceps Rope by Altus. I would put the Altus Tricep Rope on my top two in my list of attachments to buy.
What is Altus Tricep Rope?
It is a very simple piece of equipment. It's made of heavy-duty rope. The rope is twisted making it extraordinary strong. I can say it is virtually indestructible especially for home use. We have had it for years and the only wear is on the steel! That sounds strange but what happens is that the Rope has steel at the top, which clasps onto the lat tower so it can be pulled down. That metal piece has gotten some scratches over time due to it hitting the steel tower.
Altus Tricep Rope is not as rough on my hands as others I've used in the gym. There is no covering over the rope but there seems to be a glaze of some sort that makes it less rough than others.
The rope measure about 21 inches not counting the rubber ends. It is almost an inch thick. The rubber ends add another 1 ¾ inches to each end.
Each end of the rope has rubber tips. These ends come in very handy with some of the exercises for which I use the Altus Tricep Rope. The Rope is known for its work on your triceps. Your triceps are the part of your upper arm that flap in the wind when you lift up your arm. I will get into a few exercises you can do later.
At home I connect it to a high pulley and do some exercises. Since I don't have a low pulley I can't use my Rope to work my biceps but I'll tell you how you can.
First triceps exercises:
Standing away from the machine pull the AltusTricep Rope and as you hit the bottom of the movement allow the Rope to part slightly. Hold for a second or two and slowly go back to the original position.
Another triceps exercise I love to do with the Rope is the overhead extension. Standing with your back to the machine and the cable at a higher than your head level, grab hold of the rope at the plastic ends and pull so that the rope is over your head (some people tilt their heads down - but just a little). Pull the rope straight out and you should feel your triceps tightening.
Biceps exercises:
On your low pulley attach it and take an end in each hand, bend your knees as if you are lifting a barbell, come up pulling the rope and weights with you. At the top of this exercise I part my arms slightly in a sort of reverse triceps pull down. The rope can be used to do hammer curls, one arm bicep curls just to name a few.
Abdominals:
Depending on what equipment you have at home, this Rope can work many muscle groups. If you have a bench, attach the Altus Rope to the top and sit on the bench with your back toward the tower. Grasp each side of the rope with your hands and as you pull down, crunch with your abdominal area. This will work your core.
Jo's Final Thoughts:
The Altus Tricep Rope is one of my favorite attachments. It should be an essential part of a home gym. If you belong to a gym, experiment a bit. Start with the triceps pull down and the bicep curl, which are the easiest to do so you won't feel so self-conscious.
The rubber at the ends give off an odor. It isn't terrible enough for me to rate the Rope down.
The price is around $20.00.
