Pros:Clip, FM radio, fitness feature, touch screen, intuitive functions

Cons:None, except maybe so small it's easy to lose.

The Bottom Line: Small and packed with features; fitness, FM radio, watch/stopwatch and more.  Easy to use touchscreen, convenient clip.

After several years I finally managed to lose my older iPod, I think 2nd generation or thereabouts, with the click wheel.  I loved it, and never felt compelled to get a new model, but now I had to.  Gee, what an awesome improvement with the Apple iPod Nano 6th Generation.

~ Product Description

The iPod Nano 6th Generation has a touchscreen and has done away with the old click wheel format.  It’s a tiny square shape, with a 1.54” (diagonal) TFT color LCD display.  It has 8 GB capacity for about 2,000 songs.  Apple says you’ll get up to 24 hours of audio playback on a single charge.

There is support for AAC, Protected AAC (iTunes Store), MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV audio formats.  There is a one-year limited warranty.

There are three buttons on this iPod; on/off, and volume up and down.  Of course there’s the headphone jack, and charger port.

One of my most favorite features is the clip.  The iPod Nano 6th Generation has a flat squeeze-clip on the back so you can clip the unit to your pocket, shirt, pants, belt, purse, sleeve, wherever, which makes it so convenient.  Love it!

Another feature of the 6th Generation iPod is that you can listen to FM radio.  Also there is a Fitness feature where you can track calories, duration and distance for walking and/or running.  There is also a clock and a stopwatch, photos, and podcasts selections.

You can find this in a selection of colors, including Blue, Green, Orange, Silver, and Graphite.  I chose the bright pink, just because it helps me locate it in my purse or bag.

In the box you get the iPod, headphones, and USB charger.  It’s easy to get going and set up, you just need iTunes on your computer.  It retails for $129, but you can find it online for about $117.  I saw Best Buy had it online for $117, but when I went to their brick and mortar store it was $129.  When I mentioned they had it online for $117, they gave it to me for that price.

~ My Experience

The iPod Nano 6th Generation 8GB is very intuitive and easy to use.  In fact, it’s much easier than the old click wheel models.  Just flick through the main menu, tap to choose.  Scroll through options and tap to choose.  To get back to the main menu, flick from left to right.

This little item weighs hardly anything, and when clipped to my waistband I hardly know it’s there.  The fitness feature is fun to use, and while exercising, even boxing, it stays securely clipped to my waistband.  I believe the fitness feature works by (somehow?) counting steps.

The FM radio feature is a nice option, and I do use that.  You can easily scroll through channels.  The clock is another cool feature, as you can have it look like a clock face.  There is even an iPod watchband accessory so you can wear this and use it just like a watch.

If you want to change the display orientation, say you have it clipped to your sleeve or wherever and you want to view the screen more easily, just use a twisting motion with your fingers on the touchscreen to change the orientation.

The headphones that came with this are fine, but I like headphones that have an in-line volume control.  These don’t, but the sound they produce is great and they are comfortable to wear.  There is no distinction between left and right earphones.

Apple says you can get up to 24 hours of audio from one charge.  I haven’t timed it, but I don’t think I’m getting that much time.  But, I think I also forget to turn it off, so that’s probably why.

~ Final Thoughts

I LOVE the Apple iPod 6th Generation.  It is so versatile, and packed with features.  I love the intuitive touch-screen format, the handy clip, the FM radio and Fitness options.  I can’t find any cons to this, other than maybe it’s easy to lose because it’s so small.  Get a bright color!
