Pros:Helps protect the unit, softer material, but rigid to prop up your toy!
Cons:Corners are a bit rough, but they add protection in case of drops!
The Bottom Line: If you have a first generation and want some decent protection, this is a good case that will do the job nicely.
I was very fortunate to win an Apple IPAD about one year ago now. I had wanted one, but didn't and couldn't afford the expense of one with the economy being what it was (and still is). But, when I won this first generation IPAD, I was thrilled and in shock.

After having used the IPAD for a while, I decided that I needed to give it some protection for general use and carrying it around. Mind you, I would have loved something flashy, but I know that it is not smart to draw even more attention to something that I have that others might covet or even want to steal. So, subdued was the way I wanted to go, but I wanted decent protection of the unit itself.
So, shopping I went and I picked up this Apple IPAD case at a local retailer. It was a bit pricey, but compared to scratching up the unit itself and banging it around, it was a small price to pay.
This is a form-fitting cover. You slide the IPAD into the case and you really have to push it in, as it is very snug! It's a softer material that is kind of a micro-fiber style. It has a slight softness to it that can brush up against things and pick up a touch of dust. But, it's a plastic-type cover that you can slightly wet down and wipe off any dirt. Obviously, you don't want to soak it, but you probably could and it would dry off easily with a dry towel and a little airing out.
The case has a little bit of a "bumper" as I like to call it around the corners, giving you a little added protection. There is a smidge of extra material buffering the corners of the IPAD, which are rounded anyway, but, corners seem to be where expensive items like this tend to fall and get hit on, so it gives you just a touch of added buffering if that should happen to you.
The case has a pre-formed bend in the cover to allow you to use it as an easel to prop up the IPAD. It doesn't matter if you want to prop it up horizontally or vertically. I find that the horizontal works the best giving your hands a break from holding the pad upright and / or allowing you to type two-handed if you so choose.
You can set it up vertically, but that is like putting a book upright, straight up and down without having a slant or incline to it. I find that a bit harder to deal with when reading or looking at stuff on the unit itself for very long.
The case, since I forgot to mention, is very rigid. It is very strong and doesn't bend. This helps give you protection and give you the great easel type propping without having to worry about it giving out.
I have an eight year old that uses the IPAD too, and she will wiggle the cover back and forth. She is kind of rough sometimes opening it, or propping up the unit. But, so far, I haven't seen any nicks, rips, tears or creases show up on the case and we have been using it roughly 10 months now. That, to me, says a lot!
When we purchased this case, it did come with a cloth for cleaning the glass of the unit, which was nice. You can either store it on the unit when the case is close or possibly store it elsewhere.
The case doesn't lock down on the unit, it just lays down flat arcross the glass to protec the IPAD. So, if you are winging it around the flap can and will pop open. I kind of wish that it had a touch of velcro or a lockdown type clip to close it and keep the top closed. But, that's just a user's suggestion for future models!
There are openings for you to be able to put on headphones, easily turn on and off the unit and charge up the batteries. Little finger sometimes have issues finding the on and off button as the cut out is just perfectly sized to the button and with the extra buffer or bumper there to protect the corners, you have to kind of root around a few seconds to find the button.
But, that also is a plus because you cannot easily bump the on/off switch in the middle of something. I find that the volume button is similar for my child as the on/off. It takes a few seconds to get into the right spot to hit the up/down volume button with the reinforced sides. But, the cut outs are perfect. This cover literally fits like a glove.
This is a very nice case to protect your IPAD a bit. It's not terribly soft, but the micro-fiber material is soft enough that I haven't found terrible pains after holding for a bit, except along the corners where the reinforcements are located.
It's easily cleaned off, durable and seems to be holding up really well. It comes in one shade and that is black with the Apple logo right on the front. So, it's somewhat inconspicuous, but it still advertises exactly what it is with that logo.
You can prop up the unit easily with the small bendable spot on the lid. It isn't the greatest for vertical propping, I find it best on horizontal propping, personally.
The cost, well, it's Apple so, you should pretty much find these in stores around the U.S. for about the same price, right around $40 give or take. I have gotten my money out of it, that is for sure, and it doesn't look like I will have to replace it any time soon, unless I go for something else with more padding or a different propping option!
