The Bottom Line: If you need a portable computer, don't even consider anything else. Use one for a week and you'll see what I mean.
For years, I have been an avid macbook hater. Seriously. A laptop with the specs of some pc that costs 1/3 the price with a glowing apple logo to justify spending the extra. It just didn't make sense. However, a few months ago, I decided to sell my dell xps and buy the newer model. After putting it up, I got an offer to trade for a macbook pro and since the macbook was at least $300 more than my xps, I took it just to resell the shiny apple. I wanted to make sure everything worked properly before I sold it to some poor soul so I used it for a week. In the next week, my world was turned upside down. This laptop was so great, i felt horrible about all the bad-mouthing I had done about it for the years before. It is so well built, when I have to go help my mom on her toshiba.. it just feels like cheap hollow plastic. The macbook feels solid and has no flex in the chassis. The color of the macbook also hides fingerprints and sweaty palm marks very well. The screen is better than any pc I have ever seen. The backlighting on both the screen and the keyboard go from anything MEGA bright to barely lit depending on how someone might like it. The trackpad is huge and so nice to use, I stopped using an external mouse all together. The only time I still use it, is to play video games like Guild Wars 2. Yes it plays it. I couldn't believe it, I mean yeah it's only on minimum settings but I'm happy. The computer is silent. No fan noise or hard drive noise whatsoever. The webcam on it is about the same quality as the one on my XPS which was touted one of the best on the market. The keyboard keys are really nice soft touch materials and are much quieter than most. Another neat feature is if you are using the webcam or sound recording, the keyboard noise is suppressed and won't be recorded. Mine came with Apple Care until 2015. I haven't had to use it yet and don't think I ever will. The greatest feature of this laptop is the battery life. My xps was advertised as a 10 hour battery life computer (I had the extended battery pack that stuck out ~ an extra inch). When the laptop was brand new, with screen brightest to the absolute lowest setting, wifi off, backlit keyboard off, no running processes etc.. I would get about 9 hours of battery life. So it definetily didn't meet expectations. This laptop had an advertised 6 hours of battery life, yet with the same settings as the dell (everything off) I would get 11:30 of battery life. On top of that, the laptop is already a year old, so when it was new, it may have even been better. That's nearly double what Apple says it would do. I know that those settings aren't a good measure of real world battery life but even on wifi, listening to music, and typing something up with med brightness, it will easily get 9 hours of life. The charger attaches to the computer via a magnet so if anyone ever tripped over it, it wouldn't make your laptop fly off the table, it would just come apart. The speakers are so loud and at max volume they are just as clear as when they are quiet. The screen isn't squisshy LCD like most. It's made of a glasslike material, like a tablet almost. The operating system is much more intuitive and simpler to use than a windows or linux based set-up. I thought I would have problems finding software for a mac but I have gotten everything I use on to it without even having to use a windows double boot. I have Autocad, Spotify, OpenOffice, Evernote, and all the games I had on my pc. This laptop has no weaknesses. If there's anything that's not great, it doesn't have an hdmi port/vga port/dvi port. Nothing. The way apple solved this issue is brilliant. Instead of having all these ports, they have a thunderbolt port which as adapter's to allow you to hook up whatever it is you want to use. Another slight problem is that it only has two USB ports. I guess since it's only a 13 inch laptop, most of them are this way, but sometimes 3 would be nice. Overall the Macbook Pro is the best laptop I have ever come across. Sure you might have to spend a bit extra but Macbook's don't lose their value like PC's. So in the end, you end up getting more of your money back so the price difference is irrelevant.
