Who would have thought that a product containing Algae could actually help clean my face. When I think of Algae, I think of pool scum. I was eager to try a product claiming that Algae is good for the skin.
The product: Aubrey Organics Blue Green Algae with Grape Seed Extract for Oily Combo Skin
As Described on the Aubrey Official Site www.aubrey-organics.com:
-Balancing toner gently clears away excess oil and impurities and soothes stressed skin.
-Helps normalize the complexion with Aubrey's skin-balancing herbal base and goa herb.
-Formulated with grape seed extract and milk thistle, powerful antioxidants.
-Calms and smoothes the skin with Canadian willow-herb, organic lavender and two kinds of camomile.
How These Claims Live Up:
-Claim #1: Balancing toner gently clears away excess oil and impurities and soothes stressed skin.
After application, I noticed right away how smooth and soft my skin felt. It also felt very slick, so that would lead me to believe that the claim to "clear away excess oil and impurities" is correct. I would also have to agree that this formula is gentle, because my sensitive skin felt oil-free but not tight and dry afterwards.
Claim #2: Helps normalize the complexion with Aubrey's skin-balancing herbal base and goa herb.
The phrase "normalize the complexion" confused me at first, but what I believe it is intended to mean is that skin that is combination/oily (like mine) will be less oily and more uniform throughout the T-zone. After using this across my entire face, I would have to agree that the oily areas were stripped of their shine without being stripped of all moisture. This toner did a nice job of making my face feel balanced.
Claim #3: Calms and smooths the skin with Canadian willow-herb, organic lavender and two kinds of camomile.
My face is very sensitive. I almost bought the Aubrey Toner for sensitive skin, but decided against it because there were very few ingredients in the sensitive skin formula, and I really wanted to try out one with many different plant extracts. Aside from being sensitive, my skin is definitely combination/oily.
My sensitive complexion did not suffer from this product. My face was a little red after initial application, but soon evened out. I make sure to apply it at night after I wash my face, before I put on my moisturizer and go to bed. That way, any type of irritation can calm during the night. Once I use this for a little longer and feel confident that my fussy skin will not react (meaning get red and dry) I will feel confident enough to use it during the day as well.
Goof-Proof to Use:
This goes on like your average toner would.
After washing my face with my regular non-organic facial soap, I took a cotton ball (as directed on the bottle) and swiped across my forehead, the bridge of my nose, chin, and very lightly traced over my cheeks.
The product takes a moment to soak in, and the smell takes a little getting used to. It is nothing unpleasant, but does smell strange . I am getting used to using products with no added fragrances that smell like crushed up plant extracts. However, the smell fades quickly and is not offensive enough to state it as a con. After using a few times, I actually start to like the weird, woodsy smells that all Aubrey products seem to carry.
Packaging/Price:
The 8 oz bottle of toner runs for around $9. This price is insanely inexpensive compared to toner from lines like Clinique and even basic drugstore brands. It can be purchased from your local Whole Foods Store, or at the Aubrey Organics official site at: www.Aubrey-Organics.com.
The bottle is easy to use, and has a pop-top like a shampoo bottle. The main thing to be careful of, is when you tip the bottle to wet the cotton ball, the consistency is very watery so tip slowly so you don't lose any running down the sink.
Ingredients:
Aubrey's Herbal Base: (Deionized Water, Natural Grain Alcohol, Witch Hazel [Natural Herbal Extract], Vegetable Glycerin; the following whole herbals: Organic German Camomile Flowers, Organic Calendula Flowers, Organic Lavender Flowers, Organic Peppermint Leaf, Coltsfoot Leaf and Organic Nettle Leaf; Extracts of Roman Camomile, Linden, Sage, Clematis, Coneflower, St. John's Wort, Watercress, Burdock Root, Lemon, Ivy, Soapwort, Meadowsweet, Bladderwrack, Horsetail, Blue Mallow, Pellitory Root, Cucumber, Elder Flower and Arnica; Aubrey's Preservative [Citrus Seed Extract, Vitamins A, C and E], Organic Lemon Peel Oil), Organic Aloe Vera; Lavender Water, Extracts of Fennel, Hops, Balm Mint, Mistletoe and Yarrow; Organic Blue Green Algae; Extracts of Grape Seed, Milk Thistle and Canadian Willowherb; Goa Herb
Final:
Aubrey Organics continues to impress me with their gentle, affordable, and all natural products. I would recommend this toner for people like me with sensitive skin that can sometimes be oily and breakout-prone. If this is not your skin type, the Aubrey line carries variations to suit any skin need.
