I bought the M50s during audio technica's equipment sale while i was an intern at a studio. They were two steps above what I had used in class, and a step below the big mamas. They were recommended to me by the engineer I worked mostly with as a good starting too to my home mixing setup.

These headphones are incredibly comfortable for long time wear, for starters.
The sound quality is amazing for the price, you'd think they were maybe $300-$400 ATs. The overall sound is crisp, clear, and very good for solo mixing or recording. While they are not the biggest, best, most expensive, or fanciest b any means, they do their job incredibly well with great clarity.
Best of all you can blow your friends away outside of the studio with the right connector. They think their skull candys are good, until they hear the sound of Audio Technica.
