Pros:Light weight, built with pride, inexpensive compared to other fifth wheels
The Scamp is special to me. When I first moved to Minnesota
Recommend this product?
about 9 years ago I flew into the Minneapolis airport. My
daughter and I rented a car to drive up to Northern
Minnesota to our new house in the woods. We came upon
Backus Minnesota the home of Scamp Trailers. Near Scamp
is a cemetery where many of my family members have been
laid to rest. I felt a strong draw. Though it was very
cold we stopped at the cemetery. We visited my
grandparents and other family members. Little did I
know that my son would be laid to rest here in just a
few short years. Shortly my daughter announced
"I have to pee REAL BAD!" I glanced around the little
town and spotted Scamp trailers. My mother told me before
I moved from California that my cousin Mr. Eveland owned
Scamp in Backus, Minnesota. We got in the car and headed
over there. We walked in and said, Hi,
I'm your Cousin can my daughter use the bathroom?
This was my first introduction to Scamp. I was
astonished at the great pride they put into their
trailers. They treat each one as if they have given
birth rather than built it. Across the street from
Scamp is where the woodworking for the Scamp is built.
The woodwork too is made with great pride and diligence.
The woodwork is created by woodworkers that sit back and
look and say to themselves, "How can I make this better?"
Many times I would come back to Scamp. Jim, one of
the sales people would buy me a soda from the old
fashion soda machine out front. We would sit and talk.
Often the phone would ring. Most of the time it would be
someone wanting to buy a Scamp. But, often it would be a
proud owner of a Scamp just calling to tell Jim about their
latest trip and how much they liked their Scamp. Many times
people would stop by on the way to a campground. Jim
would of course buy them a soda and they would sit and
chew the fat and do nothing but talk about how wonderful
their Scamp trailer is!
What makes this funny looking egg on wheels so special?
The Scamp is light, wind resistant, pulls like there is nothing
behind the car and it's very inexpensive compared to many
other trailers. The weight of the 19 ft. Scamp is only
2000 lbs. The Okanagan UL 19 5, which prides themselves on
their light weight fifth wheel weighs 2950 lbs. The Gulf
Stream Ameri-Lite Fifth Wheel weighs 5750 lbs. If your
looking for a fifth wheel that isn't full of fancy gadgets
and want something that tows easily and is very durable
this may be the fifth wheel for you.
The body is made entirely of fiberglass. The greatest
feature of all is the light weight of the trailers and
fifth wheels. A small car can tow there smallest trailer.
A small truck can tow the 19' fifth wheel. If you buy a
heavier fifth wheel and have to buy a 3/4-ton pickup can
you imagine the price of fuel? The savings buying a
lightweight Scamp and towing with a smaller vehicle is
much more cost effective.
The length of the fifth wheel is 19 feet the height is 8'10''.
The total width is 6'8'. It has a fairly comfortable queen bed
in a loft in front. This fifth wheel will sleep from 4 to 6
people. There is a sofa that converts to bed. Also the dining
room area converts to a bed.
The standard Scamp 19' 5th Wheel sells for $9595. From
there you add on what you want. Shower & toilet with a
gas water heater add on feature is $1292.00. You can
opt for an electric water heater instead of the gas for
the same price. If you prefer you can just get a
toilet for $799.00. You can even go cheaper than that
if it will fit your needs. A Sani Potti can be purchased
for just $93.00. A roof mounted air conditioner can
be added for just $749.00. A 12,000 BTU furnace
with a thermostat can be added on for 321.00. From here
you can add on according to your needs. Choose a oven
($496.00), 1.9 Cubic Foot Refrigerator 12V-110V-Gas
($603.00), Power Range Hood (12V) ($97.00), 2 Speed Roof
Fan ($168.00), or many other options. I really like this
system of choice. So many companies shove this stuff
down your throat if you don't want it nor need it!
The cost of the Scamp with the fifth wheel package
Standard equipment is 20 Amp Power-Converter w/Charger,
R Ride Suspension, Electric Brake & Control, 25' Service Cord
110V, Floor Carpeting, Dual Gas Tanks, 6-4" Foam Cushions,
Dinette & Beds, Stainless Steel Sink, Clothes Closet, Privacy
Room (where the toilet and shower will go if you want it)
2 Burner Stove, Opening Roof Vent (2), Ice Box (35 lbs.),
110V Fluorescent, and 12V Lights (int.).
There is something about a Scamp when you walk in. It feels
like home. When you’re sitting in the Scamp it is a
comfortable and warm feeling. Of course if you want a
more deluxe model they have it. On the deluxe model you
can have rich hardwood interiors, microwaves,
a more private loft area with stairs and much more.
Scamp in fact with custom build for you from the ground up.
If you choose every possible option available the very most
the custom, 19' fifth wheel could cost you is $17,000. I
can not find another fifth wheel in this class that is
that low in cost.
Coming to Minnesota would be a great deal of fun to pick up
your new Scamp. Then you can trailer all the way home
taking in the scenery. If you want it delivered that isn't
a problem, nor is it expensive. Scamp has their own delivery
service to anywhere in the US. They will truck the fifth
wheel all the way to California for only $1090. When we
moved to California I wanted to freight my King sized King
coil mattress set to California. The trucking company wanted
over a thousand dollars just for that!
A story I often heard reminiscence at the office was a family
who had bought a Scamp trailer who had it parked in the open
during 2 hurricanes. The Scamp withstood 90-mph winds and
torrential rains and it didn't leak a bit.
Scamp is a family business. They take great pride in their
trailers and fifth wheels. The customer service is first
above all other companies and they stand behind Scamp
with their outstanding warranty. Scamp is my
family and I'm darn proud and impressed with the product
they linger so diligently over. Scamp cares what there
customers think! Give them a call I’m sure they’d be
thrilled to hear from you. Just tell them you read this
review and that their cousin sent you! 1-800-346-4962
