First of all let me say...I love my little Cavalier! I kind of lucked into it because it was in my price range when I needed a car, any car. I bought it in 1995 with 93,000 very rough miles on it. The car's interior was already pretty roughed up, and it was obviously not a pampered car. Now, at 13 years and 158,000 miles, it has far exceeded my expectations. It is still running smoothly and is very dependable.
Most problems with this car have been typical for a car with this mileage, belts and hoses worn out, windshield seal coming loose, and a broken belt tensioner. The biggest problems were with a small part in the automatic transmission (not the whole transmission) and broken transmission mounts. The good thing is that when repairs are needed (as on any car)they are not expensive. Parts aren't expensive (like on newer cars) and it's a simple car a typical driver can actually do some work on.
My cavalier still runs with its' original transmission, engine, power windows/door locks, and a very nice sounding factory radio/speakers. It used to idle rough, but when the engine mounts were replaced, the vibration stopped and now it idles very quietly. Overall, I love this little car. It is not a show car, it is good basic transportation.
Good for people looking for basic transportation at a good price.
Avoid if you need a fancy car or fast pickup from a stop.
