Pros: Fun, easy ragtop, great handling, excellent gas mileage, just a fun and reliable car
Cons: underpowered engine, weak rear end, not a macho car.
I am the proud owner of a Red 1990 Mazda Miata, MX-5.
what drew me to the car initially was its smaller size, great body lines, and the fact that it is a convertible.
I purchased my miata several years ago for about $3,000USD, and the smile hasn't left my face yet.
Most owners will initially profess a love hate relationship with this car with the majority leaning to the love side of the equation.
From a performance perspective, these first iteration MX-5's were woefully underpowered. The stock 1.6 liter four cylinder engines barely had enough oomph to do anything. *factory horsepower figures were around 105 hp., but in a vehicle that weighed around 2200lbs, it provided modest amusement.
The two things that really made the miata such a gem are it's nearly Jedi-like handling, and the ease and joy of the rag-top. Honestly this car is just plain fun.
And interestingly enough, if you peruse the internet with some regularity, you will come across several websites that cater to the increasing ability to Modify the MX-5. And modifiying this car has been soo much fun. It really boils down to how much money you want to spend.
In the last two years my cute little convertible has grown up to be quite the feral little cat. Triple the horsepower and double the handling, has made this car one heck of a fun ride. And the gas mileage is still pretty decent too!
