Pros: It cornered like it was on rails. It was easy to get in and out.
Cons: The reliability of the car. Gas mileage. Finding garages to fix its problems.
The Bottom Line: Don't waste your money unless you like tinkering with cars..alot! I can't believe there is an enthusiast following for this piece of crap!

I originally bought this car with only 70,000kms. It already had the manual transmission replaced (I think at 50,000kms). There were so many things that started going wrong with it. The driver's side door handle broke off, (This is a common problem I found out cuz when I went to the junkyard to get another one, all the scrapped volkswagens had the drivers door handle missing. The car left me stranded twice within one week. The first time it stalled out, I had to pay for a tow to a repair garage that was far away (I went to two garages close by but they did not want to work on the golf) I found out it had a corroded grounds. Within 4 days the car stalled again. The computer fried this time. (which I found out on enthusiast websites this is a common problem with that year and model). The car would leak water through the door onto the seat belt so I had to wear a wet seatbelt everytime it rained. It got crappy gas mileage. It was a little quicker than most cars I've driven but I would rather have the gas mileage. It had the most annoying buzzer (for keys in the ignition) so I took it out.The lights on the back filled up with water, causing the taillight lightbulb to burst everytime I put a new one in! I sealed the stupid sun roof cuz it leaked too. the exhaust rattled loud cuz the rubber thingy that holds it up, broke. It had a stupid bar that ran across the rear cargo area of the car. This made for difficulty in putting stff in the back when I went shopping. I only drove this car for another 30,000kms before I sold it. It was crap. Never will I buy another VW for the rest of my life! If you want to repair cars yourself (like I do) You need a plethora of special tools and hex keys to do anything to this piece of junk! The wiring was insane-o. If you wanted power locks and stuff, VW had designed this "air system" or something that was completely ridiculous!
