The 1991 CRX 2nd generation is the last production year of this vehicle.
Although I no longer have this car, it is the one I will always remember it with great fondness. During my ownership, my 1991 CRX Si has never failed me. I report happily that this car has never "broken down", and the only work done was regular scheduled maintenance.
The 1988, 89, and 90 CRXs are essentially the same with little change from the 1991. Only readily recognizable differences are the cornerlight screws located on the exterior of the lights while the '91's are under the hood. The instrument panel screws on the earlier models are apparent while the '91's are hidden. There has been a
recall on the earlier models' restraint system(seatbelt). The fastening latch must be repaired...please see your nearest dealer for replacement part details.
This car runs well on almost any grade gas. It gets about 320 miles on a full tank and 30 mpg city/40 mpg freeway. I paid about $12.00 for a full tank.
The SI model (Sport Injection) comes only in manual transmission. Although some report the bite to be too high and vague, this can easily be corrected by a simple turning of a screw by your foot. By doing this, you are not harming the car.
After about a year, I wanted to make the car a little more sporty but not too crazy. I added an RC (Russ Collins) bored throttle body to the airflow which increased my HP by 10 and dramatically increased the throttle response (your car will still pass smog). Since RC specializes only in injectors now, you can obtain a throttle body through Bullfrog
www.gude.com for $250. I also replaced my front discs with Integra slotted rotors for more stopping power (they will fit without any modification), Tokiko Illumina adjustable shocks, and polyurethane bushing on my struts. This allowed the car to take turns better and gave me a little push when I need to change lanes.
The front seats designed by Recaro are very comfortable on long trips (they are also highly adjustable to accommodate all types of drivers). The steering wheel adjusts up slightly by means of a manual lever located on the bottom of the steering column, there is not too much headroom however.
The interior is a little lacking in modern luxury. There are no cup holders, and the stock radio is has a single din tape deck and receiver. Upon turning on the a/c, the car experiences a significant drop in power and eats up a lot of gas. The upper dash is flat and has a two main indentations for your miscellaneous items. The interior on the SI is black carpet and dark gray plastic. The door has some fabric onto which is written "CRX." Both doors have a little "ledge" with a cubby hole for other miscellaneous items and can also be used as an "arm rest." The center console is a long piece that extends from the dash board to the emergency brake. This contains all the climate controls, radio, yet another cubby hole under the radio for your misc. items, ashtray, lighter, clock, gear box, and air vents.
SPECS: 1.6L, 5 speed, SOHC, displacement 1590, horsepower 108@6000 rpm, Torque 100@5000, redline 7000, quartermile 16.2 SECS, tires 185/60/14, 4 wheel disc brakes
SIMPLE PREVENTATIVE and AT HOME MAINTENANCE 5w30 (for older cars 50,000+ use 10w30), clutch (depending how you drive, every 75,000 mi), when replacing CV joints replacement of entire axle is recommended, check tranmission oil level and differential fluid every 3 months, check belts (if it does not look worn, the correct tension is a half turn. If it snapa, you could easily bend your valves leading to costly repair), check distributor rotor by taking cap off and checking the rotor itself (looks like a propeller) for a burnt stripe but don't forget the order of the wires, check bushings on suspension but not neglect the washers and grommets, headlight level adjustable by turn a screw located on top the lights.
Those in cold climates:If you live in an area with a predominantly cold climate, I suggest replacing the battery with an Interstate battery with a large amount of "CC" which are cold cranking amps. The higher the rating, the more easily the car will start up after being left overnight. Also, have your mechanic suggest a different type of differential oil. It may also be a good idea to spray the undercarriage with rust prevention treatment according to the mount of salt on the road. Last, but not least, don't forget to leave your wipers up off the windshield and change your cold weather antifreeze.
PROS: easy to parallel park (almost no need to reverse into spots), two seater, great looking, sunroof, extremely spacious trunk, very inexpensive to maintain, easy to "fix up", extra lockable hatch behind seats (great place to put your amp), seats made by Recaro, convenient center console/ cockpit features
CONS: no power steering, two seater, no power windows or doorlocks, trunk struts give out easily, hard to work on car due to tight engine bay, delicate lightweight body and exterior construction, weak tie rods

EFFECT ON CAR INSURANCE: Most insurance companies categorize sportscars as cars with an engine larger than 2.0 liters, autos with stock turbo, or two-seaters. This car falls within this criteria.
