When i first drove this car a instantly became adicted. I haven't driven many cars out there, but i've had enough selection to say that the Honda civic is so far my favorite. I got a hold of this car when there was about 120,000 miles on it. Like most people with a car that has that many miles on it, i was expecting it to keel over in another month or two. But again it surprised me.
Now after driving it constantly, going about 50-70 miles per day each day of the week, I chalked up another 52,000 miles on it. It becomes a little more of a gas hog at this point, starting at about 36 miles to the gallon when i got it, it has dropped to about 30. This may not be too low, but when you drive as far and as much as i do, it gets to you. Its 4-stroke 16 valve engine with a standard fuel-injected system can keep that 10 gallon tank running for at least 290-300 miles.
At about the 1 year mark I got a chance to see just how sturdy the car was. The car got T-boned at an intersection. The car that hit me was going at least 35... much to my surprise i could almost drive the car away. It now repaired, all said and done all that is noticable is cosmetic damage. dented panels and a slight bend in the door-jam.
This car is also good at holding a fair amount of people. It can very comfortably acomidate a family of four. there is plenty of leg room in the car, even behind my seat (I stand 6' tall). The only thing in this car that is a little smaller than average is the trunk. It is somewhat shorter in height and a little less deep than other cars. The main reason for this is its ability to hold a full-sized spare, no more of this limping home after a flat.
The handling on this car is comparable with some of the sports cars out there. Though i don't suggest taking corners at a ludicrous speed, but it can stay on the road a little longer than others. The car's acceleration is quite fast for a family car. I can generally get from 0-60 in about 5-6.5 seconds (i'm not a professional driver either). It comes standard with a 5 speed transmission(manual cars) and I'm not sure about the autos.
For those of you that like to do the repairs on your own, this section is for you. The engine is very small, but the compartment is equally small, making it hard to work around. Doing your basic oil change and tune up is easy to get to. when it comes to replacing the head gasket, you have to do some weaving around. I found that the exaust manifold is the most difficult to remove from the engine without damaging the fan assembly (or any body parts that feel like getting in the way). But once the head is unbolted the weight makes it easy for one person to do this job without any machanical assistance.
But all in all, this car is worth what ever you paid for it. I know that it has served me well and will serve me for at least another 3-4 years.
