I bought my 1991 Pontiac Sunbird used for about $5K in the winter of 1998. It had about 60,000 miles on it but since then I've already gotten it up to 100,000.
What I like about the car:
GREAT DESIGN: the design is well ahead of its time, looks like something closer to the late 90's, not early. It looks like a race car doesn't it? Depends if you got the kind with the optional spoiler and luggage rack. This car looks best in dark blue. In red or maroon it seems too femine and in black it looks like a punk's car.
GOOD FEATURES: comes with standard features: power steering, anti-lock brakes, AC, tape and radio with good stereo system (6x9's in the rear really kick even without an amp or a sub), tilt wheel, HUGE TRUNK!!!!
BAD FEATURES:
Even though this has power steering I've found the wheel to be more difficult to turn than most other cars'. Definitely not a car for senior citizens! What also sucks is this car's known for its AC to break down easily. I was told it would cost about $400 to put a new compressor in it and that's not really worth the investment. And for a V6 it has power but not enough power, the speedometer only goes up to 100 mph when it certainly should be capable of getting to 120 or 110 at the least. If you drive it faster than 85 you can tell you're pushing the car so I wouldn't recommend it. It has no problem accelarating, but once you get it on the highway you'll at least be able to keep up with 65mph zone traffic but you still get smoked by people going 85 or 90 or faster.
My biggest pet peeve about this car: NO FRIGGIN' CUP HOLDERS!!!!!
OTHER STUFF:
I installed a $1500 sound system and the acoustics in the car are great for one. You can pull down the back seat in a second to let a subwoofer really hit the inside. If you get a really powerful amp and sub combo you could really rock the neighborhood! I recommend getting a CD player with the fold-down face instead of a changer because there really isn't much room in the car to put a changer where you could reach it easily.
CONCLUSION:
If you're looking for a used car and you can find one of these with less than 75,000 miles you definitely should go for it because they're listing at a very cheap price now. They're one of the longer lasting Pontiacs and should run well up to 150,000 miles or more if you take good care of it. I make sure to only put premium gasoline in it and get the oil changed every 3000 miles or less. washing it regularly will help prevent rust and decay (not a trace of rust on my car!)
