After we witnessed a fatal automobile accident in which a small car was hit by a full-size pickup, we decided to purchase a Suburban. Many of our friends already owned Suburbans, and we were impressed by their roominess and large size for protection if in a automobile accident. We purchased a 1992 Suburban in 1996, with 60,000 miles on it. Little did we know that our purchase would assist in saving our lives four years later.
We were in a 29 car pile-up in January, and slid into a tractor-trailer rig that had jackknifed on an icy road. We hit the trailer section with the left front of our vehicle and then slammed against it with the left side of the Suburban. We all had our seatbelts on. Despite significant front-end damage and all of the left side windows breaking, the passenger compartment remained completely intact and we walked away with only a few seatbelt related bruises and very small cuts. Others in the crash with lower riding vehicles slid under the trailer section and died.
We are very grateful for having had the foreknowledge to buy a Suburban, and now own a 1997 model. We highly recommend this product for not only its safety but its dependability. We had very little in the way of mechanical problems with our 1992 model except for having to replace the transmission with a rebuilt transmission at 155,000 miles.
The only thing to consider about a Suburban is that you only get about 15 miles to the gallon with your fuel. However, how much is the safety of your family worth?
