Model Info: 1992 Isuzu Trooper S (base model) with 3.2L SOHC engine (175HP rating), automatic, part-time 4x4 system, no power windows, no power locks, steel wheels.
(LESS TO BREAK)
Vehicle purchased with 104k miles on odometer.
Items serviced at time of purchase: oil change, new shocks.
Initial driving impressions:
Acceleration is adequate with transmission shifting promptly. More power would be appreciated considering the weight of the vehicle. The trooper sits you up high giving a commanding view of the road which is aided by its expansive windows all around. The spare tire mounted on the rear door does not hinder the aft view considerably.
Despite the vehicle's age (approximately 11 years) the entire vehicle is free of rattles or excessive wear owing tribute to its build quality. Road noise and wind noise is kept low except on highway speeds when it becomes very noticeable.
The suspension gives the passengers a composed ride only upset by large potholes. Handling is acceptable considering its high center of gravity. No tipsy feeling was apparent even on unexpected emergency maneuvers. The steering is overly boosted allowing ease in maneuverability in parking, but removes any road-feel. The trooper also exhibits a relatively tight turning radius.
The rear 'refridgerator' style doors open up to a large cargo hold which can be expanded by either folding the rear seats forward-flat or flipping them forward. Take note that the doors opens wide so leave enough room behind the vehicle when parking.
There is more than sufficient room for passengers front and rear with generous head and legroom. Taller front seat passengers may want more seat travel but will still find sufficient space. The rear seats recline slightly.
The dashboard/ instrument panel is simply designed, controls for lights, wipers found on knobs flanking the instrument cluster. This frees up the clutter normally found around the steering column. The radio is located at the very top of the dashboard easing changing of settings without looking down. All essential vehicle controls are within reach and are easy to manipulate (except for the rear wiper and defroster which are located near the knee area of the dash.
Points of improvement:
The seats although comfortable and supportive at first will cause aching bottoms on long trips. The HVAC system could use a better fan to circulate the air in the massive interior. Gas mileage is dismal but typical for this size of SUV.
An update to this review will follow.
Update: (10/11/2003), 111k miles.
Service items to date:
- Replaced Spark Plug cables
The engine has developed a tick-tick noise noticeable at idle. It was diagnosed as hydraulic valve noise. Apparently it is a common symptom in the 3.2liter engines. However, it does not harm the engine.
After the taking the Trooper on a long road trip, the following observations can be made:
- The engine although sufficient on flat roads becomes severely taxed on uphill roads. The transmission will not downshift unless the throttle is pressed further. (meaning, it does not hunt between gears like other vehicles while going uphill).
- Because of its boxy shape, it is easily pushed about by strong crosswinds. But the overly boosted power steering keeps the vehicle from becoming unwieldy.
Observed Highway Fuel Mileage: 17 MPG
UPDATE: March 22,2006
Currently at 138k miles.
Vehicle travelled to northwest US and has been through two winters. The 4x4 system was tested by the wintry northwest weather.
The high range 4wd has been more sufficient for traction during snow & icy road conditions especially during uphill travel. The availability of the low range was needed only once during heavy snow conditions on unpaved paths. In such conditions the 4x4 system allowed the trooper to move forward slowly but surely.
The engine warms up quickly even in sub freezing temperatures. The HVAC system although inefficient during hot summer weather is effective in heating the large cabin. The heater vents at the end of the center console help warm the rear passengers.
Other notes:
Needs new muffler.
Engine tick still apparent but unobtrusive.
UPDATE 08-21-2006
Engine tick (hydraulic valve lifters) noise is still noticeable yet no worse. The interior is still tight, rattle & squeek free.
