By the mid 1970's, the massively large V8 equipped Firebirds with real muscle had become a pastime. Instead of 300 HP+ power outputs, Firebirds were lucky to see 160 ponies. In the mid 㣴s Pontiac re-introduced high horsepower to its Firebird with the 350 ci engine; this was seen in the GTA, which stands for Grand Turismo Americano. By bumping up the power, Pontiac created a muscle car that was perfect for the horsepower deprived car enthusiast of the early 㣴s market.
By todays standards the GTA isnt the fastest car in the word, but with an abundance of raw power, the 1992 GTA is capable of accomplishing 0-60 mph in less than 7 seconds and a top speed of nearly 150 MPH. Although the GTAs 5.7 liter engine has is a short stroke engine, it revs fairly easily thanks, in part, to tuned port injection better known as TPI. This 5.7 liter engine sounds very aggressive at start-up and on take-off. Even with an automatic transmission this Firebird offers acceleration that can rival many sports cars of today.
With its WS-6 performance and handling package, the Firebird is a decent handler. By no means is this your typical roadster, but compared to the previous generation, the 1992 Firebird was a handling champ. Cruising in the GTA is a little rough; road imperfection can be felt as are road reflectors, however no more so than say the Camaro Z28 or the Mustang Cobra. If you are looking for a car that is good for long road trips, you probably should look elsewhere.
The interior of the GTA is where my biggest gripes lye. While there is some positive attributes, such as a meaty steering wheel, the overall theme of the 1992 Firebird is severely dated, cheap, and compact. The cloth front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive; however the quality of the cloth is horrible. With only 70,000 miles on my Firebird, the seats were ripped and the stitching was coming loose on more than one section. Ergonomics are fair, everything is in reach of the driver, but I did not like the drivers position which disabled good rear vision. The rear is also very cramped, fit for children only. The Firebird has a large hatch that can carry tons of groceries; the interior was made to be very useful for cargo and front passengers, however little thought was given to the rear seat passengers. In later models, such as my '92 tester, a single front air bag was available.
The exterior, while not super car material is quite sleek and aggressive looking for a 1992 vehicle. The GTA comes with attractive alloys, hood louvers, a smooth nose design, pop up head lights, and a modest ground effect kit that makes the 1992 GTA real eye candy for American muscle car enthusiasts.
Since these cars are collectibles, its relatively hard to find one for a good price. A 1992 GTA will run you around 5,000- 10,000 dollars. If you dont mind giving up just a bit of performance a 1992 Trans AM can be had for far less cash or if you want even better performance you may want buy a 1993 Firebird Trans AM which offers 275 horsepower, better performance, and better looks.
