Before having a BMW 318i, I had a 1992 Toyota Camry. It had the power, but handling was 0%. My uncle bought a 325i and I took it for a ride. THIS WAS AMAZING! I could drive it like a go-kart! I fell in love with this car and few months later I bought a 318i with a 1.8 liter engine in it giving out 138 hp. Not bad.
When I bought it in '96 it had 97 000 km. At 140 000 km, I had to replace the head gasket. Frequent problem on 318, be careful. In the same summer, the air conditionner compressor broke and I had to buy a new one (pricey too). Few months ago the rear spring broke. Suspension is one of the most important detail on this car since it gives it all others don't have.
That's it for the main troubles I had with it. Let's talk a little bit about the inside. The front and back seats are very comfortable, but the when sitting at the back, I would have like more room for feet. The "cockpit" as I call it, is like a plane, all is easily available to the driver, because it's curved like a cockpit. One think less handy: no glass holders!
Mine is black and rust began to appear 2 years ago (1999). Because of canadian winters of course. It came with 15" 5 rays mags which give it a beautiful sport car look.
I would say for a 4-person family this car is not the ideal, because the rear trunk is kinda small for 4 persons.
As this car is a propulsion (rear wheel drive), it's not so good in the snow...
Hope this help!
